Bruce Mickle SATURDAY, APRIL i, J942. Peace River Oil . . . The offer of the provincial government to turn over the Peace River oil resources to the Dominion for the duration and one year after is an admirable gesture. Incidentally, if the offer is accepted, it will relieve the provincial administration of the responsibility of deciding whether or not private interests shall become identified with the development of the resource. Of course, no oil is as yet available in the Peace River, the ground being so far only in the drill testing stage. fidence to this effect, it may become one of Canada's most important oil producing areas. Whether or not it will be in time for the war is, of course, problematical, No doubt, the operations of testing out could be greatly speeded up. Turning over of Peace River oil to the federal government would just be another of many other important contributions British Columbia, first through the Pat- tullo government and later through the coalition, has been making to Ottawa in furtherance of the war effort. Advertising Is a Great Teacher , . . What is your view concerning advertising? Whatever it may be for, against, or unformed the fact is that advertising is a truly wonderful factor in shaping for the better the habits and practices of most men and women. Beyond all question advertisements show us how to lessen daily drudgery, how to economize time, labor and money, how to increase our social acceptance, how to care for our bodies so that we shall have less illness, less suffering, and more strength for the doing of our daily work. Advertisements tell us what science. invention and discovery have done and are doing to increase the variety of products and services which singly arm in sum provide marnets lor raw materials, for ma chines and for human labor. Advertising is not just a selfish urgement of us to buy particular products. It is that, of course, hnr. it ?? also a benef jcient influence, a great teacher, a ereat in- spirater, a great civilizer. So when you read the advertisements try to see in them more than the self-interest of the advertiser. See them as distributors of information about things designed for the common good. Our life would be a very dreary and hollow expedience if we had not the innumerable good things which advertising makes us know about.
