If the place is taken by the Japanese we shall agree that there should be a cleaning up of the British high command. Since most of the Singapore defences were erected there have been many changes in methods of attack but Malta has held out and so has Gibraltar and Britain is still impervious to German attack. Because Singapore is only sixty miles away from the Japanese front line is no reason to concede capitulation. In the autumn Germany was within sixty miles of Moscow but the Nazis have been driven back with terrible loss of life. There is nothing to show that the Japanese are better fighters than the Nazis. ' One of the organizations in the city that seems to be getting excellent results is the Red Cross Society. It is usually looked upon as the senior of the service organizations. It receives the support of practically even person in the community. Its chief task is caring for the sick and suffering directly or indirectly. Only a few people can follow in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale but thousands can take part in just as useful a way. Women can make garments and do other sewing and men who are willing to help can always find an outlet for their activities. We congratulate the members of- the local Red Cross on their work and especially those who have been doing quiet personal work, often 'little appreciated but none the less useful and important Wholesale Prices Pegged . . . In connection with a statement made yesterday that the wholesale price of groceries had not been pegged, further investigation shows that not only are the wholesalers tied to the basic price but also they are subject to very heavy penalties if they do not cany out the regulations. We are very anxious to see that the people get the facts of this controversy and evidently the government is trying to act in the public interest and we arc anxious to co-operate with them in every possible way.
