Sept. 29 Chief Justice Robert Alfred Ernest Greenshtelds of Quebec died unexpectedly in Montreal last night. One of Canada's tnot eminent Viurists. his death came as a shock throughout the Dominion. Death I; was due to a heart attack at the ! age of seventy-two. Most young lawyers go through a painful period of waiting before their first client appears, but Robert Alfred Ernest Greenshields stepped out of the room in which he had successfully passed his final examinations not only to a client, but to fame. Mr. Greenshields passed his oral sxamioation before a committee of lawyers and Judges in 1886 In FhTbrooke, Que., and as he came, out of the room he heard a tele-era oh messenger calling his name. A telegram was handed to him and it was an invitation from Charles, later Sir Charles Fitspat- rick, Q.C.. -afterwards minister of lustice at Ottawa, inviting him to so to Winnioeg to help in the de fence of a very famous prisoner Louis Rfll. who was under arrest after North West Rebellion in which he had played a leading part. Mr. Fitzpatrkk was defending Rlel and with him were Francois Lemieux. who 44 years later i as sir Francois Lemieux was w be Mr. Justice Greenshields fellow j chief Justice hi Quebec, and J. A. N. Greenshields. a brother of the fledgling lawyer. From this auspicious beginning Mt. Greenshields travelled the full length of legal experience, holding various offices in- the Bar 'Association of Montreal and Que bec, until in 1910 he was appointed pulne Judge of the Superior Court in Montreal and In 1929 act-in? chief Justice of Quebec, the latter appointment rounding out a career which made him one of the foremost British authorities on criminal law. Mr. Justice Greenshields was born at Danville. Que.. Feb. 2, 1801. the son of John and Margaret Greenshields. He secured his primary education in the Danville school and at Danville Academy ter a short while. For many year first associated with his brother and afterwards with N. K. La- flamme. K.C.. late Senator La-flamme. McManus escaped in a box of cheese, made his way to London and afterwards to Canada. He was convicted of burglary in Ottawa and after serving seven years in the penitentiary at St. Vincent de PauL Que., was arrested on be- asf of the French authorities as be left that Institution. Mr. Oreen- shiekis was able to prevent bis client going back to Devil's Island. After nine years as puisne Judge Mr. Justice Greenshields was appointed a Judge of the court of appeal in Montreal. His first task was to bring the calendar of cases in the court of review which was very much in arrears, up to date. He did this with despatch. As an appeal court Judge, associated with other English speaking and French speaking Judges, he became noted for the soundness of his Judgment in criminal and civil eates. Very few of his findings were upset on appeal. During his regime a number of causes celebre came up for decision. One of them was the libel action brought by Madame Rebecca Morin against Le Croix, a Catholic newspaper, for stating her father, the one-Umr Rev. Charles Chlnlquy. had not been legally married because he had been a Catholic priest and had taken the vow of chastity.
