Donnell in First United Church In First United Church last eve ning before a large congrqgatioJi Rev. J. A. Donnell spoke on "The Significance of Church Member ship." A special musical number was the impressive rendering of he duet, 'Hark, Hark, my Soul," by Dr. and Mrs. R. O. Large. Mr. Donnell referred to two ex- reme views sometimes held of what church membership implied. I he first one was that It was regarded merely as 'a'Tjtffcmattcr if routine. The child was bap tized, confirmed when older and .ater admitted Into membership of .he church without realizing that there were obligations involved. Some people resented the idea of obligations to the church. Yet hese same people accepted readily obligations of social customs and secular organizations. Obligations o a church did not involve loss if freedom. The other extreme view of Jiurch membership was the feeing that it was too awful, too mys-erious, for the ordinary person. It could only come as the result jf some amazing and miraculous experience, they felt. Neither view was correct, Mr. Donnell went on. Church membership did not require a stainless t extremely holy state. Christ's 'eachln? was that he came to call tinners to repentance. Church -ncmbershlp did require that the Individual would endeavor to follow the way of life as led by Testis. This meant first of all a ense of God. That the world was" not a blind mechanism. It also meant a sense of responsibility to one's fellow man. And thirdly It meant a realization of group relationship. It was not a solitary way of livlne. not that of a re cluse. Jesus lived among his fellow men, the fishermen, the farmers. the housewives, in a free and easy companioshlp. He did find and make time to commune with God alone and there got the inspiration thatmade Him the great Saviour of the world. To follow Ills way as well as humanly possible was real church membership. r Whifflets From The Waterfront Union steamer Catala, Capt.
