Daylight saving, mandatory throughout Canada, went into effect in Prince Rupert today with a minimum of fuss. With everybody making the change, there is little inconvenience. The only objection . in Prince Rupert aVl i. ?X 11 1 ll 1 a. 1 .Ml is mat u win maKe me summer nigms so long mai u win be difficult to get the children to bed. Since daylight saving is prescribed as a constituent of the war effort, it should not be a great sacrifice to exert the discipline necessary to see the children get their proper amount of sleep. We would have to put up with lots worse than that if we lost the war. Meantime, it was not so pleasant getting up in pitch dark again this morning, but the longer evening tonight will compensate for that. Daylight saving is here for t h e duration and six months after. By the time the war is over, we will probably be so used to it that we will not want to change back. In the Far East . . . The defence of Singapore and the whole position in the Far East as far as the united nations are concerned appears to depend upon the quantity and speed in which reinforcements are provided. Military leaders and officials of both Great Britain and United States, without revealing particulars, has given assurance that such reinforcements are being moved up rapidly and in large volume. t Meanwhile, the Japanese appear to have been consolidating position and organizing for further moves, concentrating most likely on Singapore. Conceivably the Allies, besides getting themselves in position for effective defence, may lie planning on a smashing attack against the Nipponese at some point. Our position in the Far East is still critical but then-is good reason to believe that it is far very far from being hopeless. The Jap has been pretty much giving it so far. Soon he will have to show that he can take it. One WaV in which time mnv he wnKtPfl i hv rniuli'rifr There are many such time wasters in Prince Rupert. These people are literary gluttons. Night and day their eyes are glued to some book of more or less doubtful value and the longer they keep it up the more vacant become their minds. One book a day seems to be a poor average for some of these voracious readers, if you ask them next week what they read this week they do not know. It is an absolute pointless occupation. The reader seems to be searching for a mental experience, a story with a plot. Having found the story and discovered what the plot is about, if there is a plot, the book Is discarded and forgot-ten. It is seldom, if ever, discussed. In order to keep up the supply of reading material almost daily visits are made to the city library, but various other sources of supply are sought and found. One recent case came to the notice of the writer where two books coming to the same house were each read before supper time and had been already exchanged and passed on before the next day. With children the result often if? that school work is neglected and a pernicious habit is developed. Children's tempers are injured. They stay up too late at night and getting up in the morning becomes a problem. The problem is to discover whether this time might not be better employed. Direction is evidently needed in regard to the manner in which the time of the children is occupied. to 26. Then followed a si -nnlnf rally by the Barons which was countered by a three-pointer by the Students. At three-quarter time the Barons led 33 to 29. The last ten minutes saw the green row since his name was entered cn the line-up. Holkestad also took scoring honors in this game with 21 points.
