There is little enough to feel cheerful about in the Russian picture today. The Red Army has fought valiantly and continues to do so. More than a year ago Adolf Hitler promised his people the defeat of Russia in six weeks. Yet Russia still fights on and, although it has suffered sorely, there is no sign of yielding. Rostov and Stalingrad, the Soviet itself admits, are in grave , danger. They may or they may not fall but if they do, hard as the blow may be, that would not constitute the defeat of Rus sia. Hard pressed as Russia may be, there is little yet to suggest . a collapse. Meanwhile Germany s lines are stretching further and further out Gains must be consolidated if they are to be held. All of this takes time and the Russian winter, of which Hitler has already had one bitter experience, will be on the invaders again ere long. I HOTEL GEORGIA I LW.
