Brilliant teamwork in both tactical -and strategical fields is the key to the good news flooding in from Sicily and Russia from every front. The coordination of Allied sea, land and aid forces in Sicily is only the most spectacular feature of an unfolding patterji. Add the' co-operation ot British, American ana Canadian armies. General Montgomery's' desert-hardened Eighth Army is spearheading the drive up the east coast in record time. The Canadians, long eager for. action, are pushing ahead in the centre of tfie Allied line. General. Patton's specially trained Seventh Army forms the left flank. Too apt to be underrated is Russia's mighty army, grinding up German strength along a 1-500-mile front. It is worth noting that the attack on Sicily began just four days after the Orel-Kursk-Belgorod line flamed into what must be one of the greatest battles of the war. The Axis hope has been to divide and conquer. The United Nations have appeared divided and condemned to operate on outside lines. But now they are strong enough to attack from all sides at once. The effect is to divide Axis strength, particularly the German, which is spread from Norway to Greece, Russia to Spain. And in the Mediterranean, especially, sea transport may afford the Allies greater mobility than- the Axis. They could, for instance, move forces from Tunisia into Greece or southern France quicker than the Nazis could from Sicily or southern Italy. A right purpose has given ihe United 'Nations moral unityand developed military, teamwork which is turning physical divisions into a positive lad vantage! Possibly the people of Italy are at last beginning to realize who their real enemies are. Permanent Forest Industry . . . A publication in Eastern Canada is taking a poll of representative Canadians with a view to receiving suggestions as to what steps the provincial and federal governments should take now to maintain a permanent forest industry. From a long range viewpoint, the ultimate crisis in the forest industry which it might be considered necessary to guard against will not be one of obtaining markets for lumber and other forest products. Demand for these products will always exist, it may safely be assumed. The crisis, if one ever does develop, might be expected to be one of supply of the desirable natural product that is suitable timber. Forestry experts have already warned us that the md of the supply of Douglas fir is already in sight. The islands and coastline of British Columbia are being likewise stripped of their Sitka spruce. In . 11 1 i 1 i 1 i i i1 1 i oiner wonis me umper is oeing usen up wnnour. maK' ing of due provision for perpetuation of supply. The answer is simple enough the utmost conssr vation of existing supply and a policy of reforesta Uoh to ensure future supply. I m Prince Rupert people are not so much interested in who provides the new theatre as' they are in having one provided by somebody. Why Worry? . . . Our forefathers existed without Sugar till the 13th century. Coal fires till the 14th. Buttered bread till the 15th. Potatoes and tobacco till the 16th. Coffee, tea or soap till the 17th. Puddings till the 18th. Gas, matches, or electricity till the 19th. Automobiles and tinned goods till the 20th. So why worry over rationing or shortages? The King is now back' in England. ACTIVITIES OF Y.M.C.A. AND Y.W.C.A. By DOROTHY GARBUTT The Hostess Another call for wringers has come in a real distress signal this time. I have mislaid the earlier list of those who have wiingers for the boys but I think most of them were taken the last time and I can use a few more names. They were so much appreciated. I was reminded of that popular song "I Came Here to Talk for Joe" when a young airman was making, or trying to make, a date for himself over the phone, it seems his pal couldn't and talking fast but It didn't do him any good I'm afraid. Can't say there isn't plenty of entertainment inv.town for the service boys now. We notice the difference at our Hut on movie nights and especially Sunday afternoons. Here is what is offered and I think it really Is something. There are five shows a week at the Navy drill hall. These are all very recent re leases and are 35 millimeter films, The Famous Players give a free Sunday afternoon show for "all service personnel and the "Y" puts on movies- three times a day, three times a week. Besides that there ,are now three regular weekly' dances, so that is quite a program, nictit wahr? My mistake, there's a war on, n'est-ce pas? the civilian war workers. These boys work hard and there Is only the one show in . town for them. I suppose I shall be drafted south for saying it but I do know that In the Old Country they have concert party .troops entertaining the war workers in their rest periods, and noon hours. Fun for all workers and then all work will be fun. A nice long letter from Clifford "Red" Humford arrived today. Shall quote tomorrow. r rv7 PURE WHITE The Experts Say - - - Summer season pointers busy housewives: GOOD DESSERT Here's a recipe which Laura Pepper, of the Department of Agriculture, considers of the easiest and best she has run across in a long time. It's for a strawberry whip. To make It, put one egg white and 1'4 cups of hulled strawberries into a bowl and whip them up with a rotary egg beater. When the mixture begins to thicken, beat in one-quarter of a cup of sugar, adding it Gradually and continuing to beat until the mixture will hold1 a peak. Five minutes should do the trick. Then add a few drops of lemon Juice, chill, and pile into sherbet glasses. If kept in a refrigerator the whip will hold its shape for as long as three .hours. If housewives use this mixture as a finish to their ' strawberry shortcakes, says Miss Pepper, there'll never be a sigh for the whipped cream topping of former years. SALADS FOR SUMMER With the summer months, says Mar ion Harlow of Nutrition Services. Spinach, peas and beans when they are young and tenderall may be used raw In salads, and all kinds of other vegetables may be used In this form as well, thus contributing their full quota of vitamins and minerals. DAILY DRIPPING Canada's laundries are short-handed and suffering from a' shortage of experienced help. In addition they are catering to the needs of the armed forces, and the fact that many laundries in congested areas ls proof of the tight situation that exists. Byrne Hoep Sanders, director of the prices hoard's consumer branch, asks housewives to help by washing small things at home. Next time the family laundry bag ls emptied, handkerchiefs, pot hold- 3S at Forcasting the exact assault coast for the invasion of Europe by the Allied forces, the current National Film Board release "Gates of Italy," has treated historically and militarily the potential power of Italian resistance. From enemy film (top) "Gates of Italy" shows a portion of the defences of the .Italian coast. Uncertain of Italy's fighting resistance In case of invasion, her cohort, Germany, had sent Nazi troops into Italian territories to bolster the defence strength against inevitable attack. Above, from a shot In the National Film Board production, Germans are seen looking outward to the Mediterranean horizon, watching, waiting for the Allied invasion move that came a few days ago. Benite Mussolini (right strip) hasn't time lor balcony speeches today. With the impact of the war having finally struck the boundaries of his Fascist Italy, he is feeling the effect of the boot this time on the Allied foot. for ers, face cloths, dollies, tea toweli, small tray cloths, bureau covers and even pillow cases miirht well be held out and washed at home. Any measures the housewife can devise to lighten the laundries' load will do much to help keep the big tubs turning.
