Phone 75 The Experts Say. - - TOMATO SHERBET With fresh tomatoes at their' best, a tomato sherbet makes a deli-; clous entree for a meal or an unusual accompaniment to a crisp vegetable salad, say the home economists in the consumer section of the agriculture department. ' To make the sherbet, combine three cups quartered, unpeeled tomatoes, six peppercorns, Jlhrce cloves, one teaspoon salt, a bit of bay leaf, one tablespoon sugar and a slice of onion. Simmer 10 minutes in a covered saucepan. Strain and add one-half teaspoons lemon Juice. Soak two teaspoons of gelatin in two tablespoons cold water then stir over hot water until dissolved. Add to tomato mixture, pour Into refrigerator pan and freeze. Stir and beat the mixture several times while freezing. If the sherbet Is be ing used with salad, the ice cube frame may be greased and placed in the mixture after the last stirring. When fresh tomatoes are no longer available, the sherbet may be made by using two and one-half cups of canned tomato juice. BLOOD DONORS For those who make regular deposits In Red Cross blood banks, Marion Harlow of nutrition service comes up with a suggestion for tne proper foods to maintain the blood count at the level re quired of a blood donbr. Donors should eat green vegetables and whole grain cereal daily; three or four eggs a week, and a generous serving of liver, heart or kidney once a week, oCt&ner if possible. Provided the proper foods are eaten regularly, donors may give blood at three-month Intervals without suffering any 111 effects, Miss Harlow says. RATION TIPS Now, that the new No. 3 ration books are in circulation, Byrne Sanders, director of the prices board's consumer branch, has Issued the following reminders to the women of Canada. Ration books should not be loaned to friends. The purchase of rationed goods without stamps encourages "black mar kets," and it is wrong to ask retailers to sell goods in re turn for ration stamps which have expired. No one except members of the Immediate household concerned should use books for the purchase of ra tioned articles. Anyone who finds a ration book should return it to thf nearest local ration board at once. Retailers should not ac cept unused stamns. These should be removed from ration books and destroyed. Finally, says Miss Sanders, no onp should attempt to make purchases with loose ration stamps. SLEEP IN COMFORT Now that Canadians cannot buy mattresses of the spring-filled type, they are finding that the solid-filled mattresses have much the same resilience, providing the ticking Is filled or packed with good quality mat- GOLD SEAL Fancy Red Sockeye lip Salmon and Herring In Tomato Sauce are both on active service but will be back on your grocer's shelf soon as conditions permit. Sit on the edge of a mattress and you'll break down its side walls. Failing to turn the mattress at least once a week produces sags and hollows. Covering it with a protective sheet of muslin guards against dust and tears and it can be kept clean and refluffed by vacuum cleaning, airing and occasional sunning.
