Phone Blue 917 is Appreciated Waterfront Whiffs Halibut Fishing Season Over Five Skecna Canneries Still Packing F Within a couple of days after the closing .of Area No. 3 this Wednesday, the last area of the Pacific Coast halibut fisheries to cease fishing under edict of the International Fisheries, all the full time Canadian halibut fleet operating out of Prince Rupert was back in port although a few American vessels are to he stui accounted for, the expectation being that they will be in by next Monday. Up to yesterday a total of 16,297,000 pounds had been landed for the season at Prince Rupert compared with 15,415,800 pounds at a corresponding date last year. The total of American landings is 12,281,000 pounds in comparison with 11,504,000 pounds a year ago while Canadian land ings are 4,016,000 pounds as against 3,911,000 pounds. x Five Skeena River canneries are still in operation Claxton, Casslar, Carlisle, Inverness and Port Edward (Nelson Brothers). They are engaged In packing chums from the Queen Charlotte Islands and cohos from the Skeena River. Fair amounts of both varieties have been available for packing across Hecate Straits from the seiners around Skldegate Inlet and the latter coming from the gillnets in and around the river. Sal mon fishing on the mainland will terminate September 24. The Island chum run should gradually become stronger during the next couple of weeks, keeping the canneries busy until early in October.
