Two factors determine the time to plant the condition of the soil and the hardiness of whatever is being planted. Experts stress the extreme importance of the first point which, they say, is very often snored by the over-eager beginner. If soil Is dug too soon, while It Is -till very moist, .the .work of cultivation as often doubled or trebled and injury to the crops planted, Is serious. Heavy soil will almost ln-ya iably form into hard, lumps that may require almost an axe to break them up. The easy test to determine when the soil is reqdy is to walk acros3 !t. If it is muddy and sticks tight o the shoes, then it best to allow It to dry out some more. If it mere- J ly presses down and crumbles when handled and brushes off shoes easily, then it is right. This is the old test of the practical gardener. Depends on Hardiness As for the second point, this i usually covered in the directions in seed catologues or accompanying the order. Certain things that would normally seed themselves and come up unasked every spring an be sown Just as soon as possible. In the flower' line this would sover such very hardy things as ilyssum, hollyh'ocks, marigolds, etc. Sweet peas also should be put . in his category, although they will not stand the winter except in sime. of the yery mildest parts of Canada. In vegetables too, one can hardly plant 6uch things as peas oo early, because they are a cool j ' weather crop and must make their ,'rowth before the days become too hot. Also In the hardy line are spinach, lettuce, radish, beets, car rots and parsnips, swiss chard, etc. Under semi-hardy, there will be beans, potatoes, corn, cabbage, etc. A very slight frost will not kill some of these but It will certainly et them back. As a matter of .fact with a few exceptions, there Is little object In planting while there !s still danger of serious frost and he soil Is cold. Nursery Stock With nursery stock, however, one olants just as soon as possible. It Is best to get It in the soil while the ground is still moist. If this Is Impossible, experts advise lthcr planting roughly in a trench "hoeling In" It U called or keeping roots soaked in water until perm anent planting can be carried out. Vegetables For Health ThU year Canadians are going to appreciate fresh vegetables more fhnn for manv vears. None too many kinds are now available In cans and with help getting scarcer professional market gardeners are mand. of .course creasing. All in all, it looks as ti the amateur will have to grow more of his own vegetables this year. He will be amazed how mucn oeuei things taste when grown in the garden right at the door. Grown quickly and picked Just oeiore cooking they are full or natural sugars. The vitamin content, too, of all vegetables is highly perishable. Within 24 hours of picking, many of them disappear entirely Experienced gardeners make several sowings of practically all City of Prince Kupcrt Ti.'vnr.u Roniori tpnHers marked "Tender tn 'PuivVi'ico McTntvro Block" Will be received by the undersigned ud to 5 am.
