SIMONDS By DOUG HOW (Canadian Press Staff Writer) The Canadians in Britain know Guy Granville Simonds commanding the Canadians in Sicily, as a man who got to be a general young and deserved what he got. He was recognized as one of the army's men of brains long before he became a major-general commanding first one, then another infantry division within comparatively few days. I As a sharp, quick thinker who I gave able expression to thelmoted lieutenant - colonel in things he thought, they saw him command of an artillery regi coming. He was a major-general at 39, the youngest of his rank in the 1st Canadian Army, one of the three under Lt.-Gen. H. D. G. Crerar in the' Infantry Corps. He went to North Africa as a brigadier from the Canadian Army, . saw the Eighth Army outfox Rommel at the Mareth Line and take Sfax. He-came back beckoned unexpectedly from his observer's post in the battlefield convinced that the minefield had put infantry ahead of the tank in fighting Importance and found himself a divisional commander. Gen. Simonds is a tall, dark man with an Imposing moustache. His accent Indicates his English birth. He leaves reporters with the impression of a fully caoable man confident of his capabilities. His present war time rise started from the rank of major. Born at Ixworth Abbey; Bury St. Edmunds, England, in 1903 he came to Canada as a young ster. He was educated as Ash-burv College. Ottawa, and at Royal Military College where he graduated In 1925. He entered the permanent army as an artilleryman. Staff College Training Gen.
