The nineers inexorably draw closer from the North, the yet to travel. It is further from Kiska to Munda than it-is from Prince Rupert to St. Johns, Newfoundland, i But already the Japanese are restive. Their Naval spokesman, who so frequently announced the "an-! ; nihilation" of the United States fleet, has been re-1 . moved from his post. The Tokyo radio boasts that : conquest of Java, Burma, Borneo has made Japan a ""have" nation, but adds: "The difficulty at present is that these materials cannot be brought immediately to Japan because of a lack of transport." i The American Navy claims to have sunk 210 Japanese ships, to have probably sunk another 29' i and to have damaged 58. Lack of transport, indeed. ; Not the least encouraging aspect of this war of attrition is Japan's persistence in sending out small, j relatively inetiective forces to supply its beleaguered ' garrisons. Apparently, their strange notions of "face" j compel them to run their "Tokyo Express" missions : of easily attacked light warships and transports to stations under siege, but their vivid realization of their utter dependence upon seapower prevents them from risking forces substantial enough either to de-i liver effective relief or successfully fight off attack. I In the meantime, the swish of torpedoes, the earth-shaking bombardments, the furious air assaults, the merciless land fighting mount in unrelenting fury on all the roads that lead to Tokyo. The Lesson of Fascism . . . . The symbol of Fascism was the bundle of sticks, or "fasces," which, as the old fable tells us, were in-1 Ueslrucuuit: Willie uicj iciimuieu tugcwici iiiuugit they could be broken one by one. The adoption of this symbol by Italian Fascists was as misleading as most of their assertions. The Fascists had only one stick in the bundle Benito Mussolini. When he was discredited at last by his ill-conceived attempt at empire-building there was nothing left of the party. But its histoiy should stand as a warning to free men for all time. It is the history of violence, of the idolatry of utter materialism, and the shameless adoption of deceit as a policy, all undertaken with such unrestrained bombast as to prevent sane men from taking its manifestations seriously. II Duce was the age's biggest joke until he became one of its biggest tragedies. Fascism was at first a circus. Then at one time it became in some men's eyes one of two choices, each an extreme. The higher ground of freedom was lost sight of by those who tried to choose between extremes. Of course, there are Fascists in Italy still. They will watch every opportunity to reassert their control. And some conservative elements may once more in human thinking. Italy has no monopoly on them. But the emptiness of Fascist swagger, and the smashing of the myth' of its invincibility by determined opposition should remain one of the great lessons of history. If the weather isn't suitable you can give the officials a rough idea of what you would have shot and that's that. It's the annual Tri-State Senior Tournament which Amarillo, Texas, has been holding for nine years now. If a man is at least 50 years old he has to he at the half-century mark to belong to the association he's as good; as qualified. Every man has the Inherent right to select those whom he-shall admit to his own home and to prescribe the mode of con-due of those so admitted. Equally, every nation has the right to select thos-t whom it will admit to the prwiief;es of residence within its boundaries and of citizenship and to demand from those seeking admission such qualifications as It may deem desirable.
