This step has not been taken in a rash manner whatsoever but after we have given due consideration to the large investment we have in motor vehicles and the rapidity with which they are depreciating due to the condition of our city streets over which we have to operate. We find we have no alternative. Our motor trucks should give us approximately 100,000 miles of operation. Under present street conditions we will be fortunate to get 30,000 miles". The tires of the. trucks are being gashed and broken down. The bodies are wracked from the numerous holes that are in the city streets. We have a hard time obtaining replacement parts and our government stresses the importance of saving our rubber. The city, Canadian government and American government cannot apparently agree as to their various responsibilities in keeping up the roads to any degree of usability. We, on our part, cannot see why we should be asked to ruin our businesses by operating our trucks under such terrible road conditions which will financially break us. "However, we sincerely trust the question of street repairs will be solved before such a drastic measure as we have stated above be taken. It was a naUon-al responsibility to do something to assist the city, Mr, Pattullo agreed. It was after Mayor Watts had made a formal request for a leave of absence not to exceed eight weeks in order to visit Montreal and Toronto on private business that Aid. W. H. Brett moved that the request for leave be granted and that the mayor be asked to proceed to Ottawa and. In co-operation with the federal member, Olof Hanson, present a brief setting forth the city's position with the request for assistance. Aid. T. H. Sorensen seconded this motion which provided an allowance of up to $100 to cover the mayor's expenses in connection with the visit to Ottawa. Aid. McKay felt that the $100 was too meagre and that at least $200 be allowed. In answer to Aid. Daggett, the mayor said that his procedure, if he went to Ottawa, would be to get in touch with Mr. Hanson and arrange for a meeting with cabinet ministers concerned. Further "in answer to Aid. Daggett, the mayor saidhe had no assurance that he would be favorably received or that he would be successful in his mission. He felt, the mayor said, that one big job of the city this year was to put this matter squarely before Ottawa In a proper way. He believed that personal representation would be the best means of getting re sults and that some one ought BRITISH COLUMBIA .. . V - to be In Ottawa with local knowledge to elaborate on the J brief. He was not anxious for the Job himself, the mayor said. If the council would like to handle the matter In some other way now was the. time to say so. Aid. Daggett felt that the coordinating committee should have been more active. He believed that no determined effort had been made to get something done by the present member Proper representations had not been made. Opposed to Idea Aid: Black did not believe the :ity was In a position to spend any money in financing a visit to Ottawa when there were so many things demanding the expenditure of money. The federal member was a business man and should be capable of putting up the city's case. The grapevine, Ad. Black said, reported that ihere was a donation at Ottawa just waiting to be picked up. Aid. Hills felt that the council would be foolish not to avail Itself of this opportunity to have the mayor visit Ottawa. Aid. Sorensen felt that, no matter what the co-ordinating committee might have failed to do, this opportunity for personal representation should be taken care of. Aid. McKay thought the council would be falling down in Its duty if the mayor was not sent to Ottawa at such a low cost. "Perhaps the whole damn committee ought to go," he remarked. "The memorandum ought to have been drawn up long ago with Insistence that the sitting member present it," commented Aid. Daggett. "And any member of the council could have so insisted" was Aid. Arnold's rejoinder. Mayor Watts said that he So you know a secret ! . So you've come across some vital information! . So you know about the movement of ships, planes ; men or goods! Don't crow about it! . . A secret told is no longer a secret! It's a weapon in the hands of the enemy. REMEMBER - our enemies are everywhere THE BRITISH COLUMBIA DISTILLERY CO., LTD, J 1 ' VP would like to have unanimous approval in going to Ottawa. If Aid. Daggett and Aid. Black considered Mr. Hanson more qualified than he to present the city's case, he was not so keen on going but he .would act on the majority wish of the After Aid.
