AND Y.W.C.A.. fly DOROTHY CJAUIJUTT The iiosiess ! don't know about Navy Week it s certainly feoin.3 to be Navy tile-end in Prince Rupert this week-end what with dances and parades and concerts and the impressive drum-head service. Makes us Just a little bit prouder our -our lads in navy blue doesn't it? The big Navy dance last night drew a larger crowa than I have teen at any of the service dances. The Empress Hall was smartly decorated with streamers of signal flags from the ceiling. Around the walls were lengths of buntine and ' at one end of the hall three mag nificent dress aynal flags. No mistaking It for anything but a Navy dance. Commander Wallace and Lieut. Commander Harrison attended for a short while and were' pleased at the veiy evident success of the dance. And cne dance orchestra, what an orchestra! It U made up of thirteen members of the Royal Canadian Navy Band from Esqulmalt and each member has been a professional musician , from well known dnnr.e hand In j civil life so Drum Major Dick , Thome tells me. Al Lnp.kip the j leader, for instance, was a member of Stan Patton's band. There are HAVE A HEART If steel is the sinew of war, lead is the heart. Forty fathoms under the sea in the battery of a submarine, or thirty thousand feet in the air 'in a bomber; lead is playing its unseen part in the great struggle. Thousands of tons of this Vital metal pouring from the huge Consolidated smeltersare being used in every phase of the '.United 'Nations war effort for total victory. When Consolidated donncd.battle dress it asked no special privileges. Lead was needed, and lots oytlkay he lowest possible price. Today the AT 40 F THE DAILY NEWS PAGE THREE fifty-one In the entire band and they come from all over Canada. They often go on tour and Just now have completed a short tour In British Columbia. They have been playing together for two-and-a-half years which ' makes their music smooth and solid and above all danceable. Last night they broadcast lor half an hour over jCFPR on the CBC system. Doug 'Allan, the vocalist with the band, ' added to the enjoyment and most of all with the romantic "Sleepy Lagoon" number while Chuck Rowe the drummer with the band, just about stole the show In the featured "Drum Boogie." The first dance after the intermission was dedicated to Coxswain Alex Bell ol the ship which brought them up from the south. It was decldely quite an evening what, with the Navy Baiid, the good humored crowd and over, well over, a hundred girls and in Prince Rupert that Is quite somethingin their pretty formals. Thanks to Drum Major Dick Thome, Band Leader Al Lockie and ATHOMS price of lead from Consolidated is approximately one-third that of the prevailing price anywhere in the free world, and less than the five-year, pre-war average price of this essential product. War has made life much harder for all of us, infinitely harder for those fighting on the land, on the sea and in the air. But you can take it from the men and women of Consolidated, there will be no holding back in production. The men on the fighting front who are giving their best for freedom will "have a heart at forty fathoms' THE CONSOLIDATED MINING & SMELTING COMPANY OF CANADA LIMITED, TRAIL, B.C. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Swain of the American Red Cross yesterday afternoon when he paid us a visit and I had the addi tional pleasure of thanking him In person for the gifts of two American flags given us last summer by the King County Branch of the American Red Cross in Seattle. It turns out that Mr. Swain was organizer of that very branch for several years. Wasn't it lucky that I had my British flag to match the American one and had both flags placed only last week ?
