Judged by the prepared statement he issued to the -m-ess we fear that Hon. R. L. Maitland, Attorney The Real War Object ... While the realists of our generation are engageU in fighting and winning the war on the battle line's and on the home front, the planning of the peace seems hr have been preempted at least temporarilv. by th6 idealists and the opportunists, who are' working for1 a new order. These people are in a decided minority but they are highly vocal. They make' promises which, under normal conditions, Ave would know could not be fulfilled during the stress of post-war i.crtujuMineiu. uui, Decause aoier men are now con cerned with the immediate nresent. the idealists and the opportunists are in some measure diverting public attention from first principles.' " 1 ' The real, reason that we in the British Empire are fightiner this war seems to be in danger of being1 forgotten. We did not enter the war in order that We might formulate a new economic system. We entered the war to save the world that was ours and thd rights and privileges which had been hard won through generation' after generation. ' Much as we hated war we loved our freedom . more. In spite of the maladjustments following the last .war we had what millions of people in Europe and Asia did not "have And a degree of freedom under democratic government which had never in all history been equalled. We had a record of continuous improvement in' social legislation and while there was place for still further advances in working and living conditions, our entire history was an assurance that the necessary changes would come. , That is what we are actually fighting for although fhe: idealists and the opportunists are seeking-to make capital by belittling the world as we knew it in 19'39. They are doing theii- utmost to sov theseeds of discontent in minds that, are furrowed and r'av aged by war. They offer the mirage of a bright new world at a time when our first necessity is the winning of the War. They confuse the serious problem of pbst-wat readjustment by offering economic cure-all of "dubious merit. ' ' There1 is n6 need to turn back the clock, for after all we are four years older than we were In 1939; but itllinn nmoa fn nlnnnni'nr mil nhaf.wnr fnfiivo wo I i Jlcould do very much worse than use 1939 as a' bas'e to Start off from. It was 1939 when we last had all of those things for which this nation is now fighting. ACTIVITIES OF Y.M.C.A. AND Y.W.C.A. By Chester Le Maistre Gosh I had a shock thi. mornhig I... wakened up and looked at the calendar and lo Friday August 13th! I quickly buried by head beneath the pillows in order to plan a course of action for this most fateful of days, only to waken up an hour iater refreshed but none trie wiser as to plan of action Then I began to think about this column. This was the final decision. I have hereby solemnly resolved not to write any column today because whatever I do or say Is bound to be thp wrong thing. The only right thing I can think of for today Is the dance tonight at the avy Drill Hall to which of course the hostesses General in the Coalition government of this prov- are lnvited and expected. British Columbia's first law officer is obviously delighted at the success which the Progressive Conservative Party has" Scored. Nobody will ieek to ' deny him the right to express his personal views on 1 this Or any other subject under the sun so long as -he does not lose sight of the importance of the portfolio he holds by virtue of an electoral verdict which .placed the Liberal Party of this province in: precisely ,the same position as that now confronting Colonel Drew in Ontario. 1 ' . Mr. Maitland is especially pleased because' Colonel Drew emphasized throughout ' the campaign the necessity of- preserving "British institutions and strengthening the British partnership. This is not a new theme with the Attorney General; he has long believed that the Conservative Party1 is the heavensent custodian of the Empire' tie, that its sanctity is expo'sed to all kinds of skullduggery1 in other political hands. Surely this poppycock is out of date! 'Only a j little more than three years ago Mr. Maitland was appearing on T.qry platforms in the federal election 1 campaign approving a 100 per' cent increase in' the price oi anauian wneat to me uniisn jiiipuner at a time when the people of the United Kingdom were getting ready for the bitterest trial of their long history. We could recite many other samples pf the Attorney General's inconsistencies .in this re gard. But we will spare him. The verdict in Ontario should underscore, for the special benefit of Mr. Maitland and the rest of the Coalition ministry, the important fact that the G.C.F. Party has set its mind on "wiririihg th "next -general election in this province, yhether' it Succeeds or fails will depend upon what the Liberals ahd Con-"'seryatives who are supposed to have jettisoned their political difference's propofe to' do about it. Ie stated among other things, that the Communists are engaged In "political scabbing" In proposing the formation of a new party of Communists. It must be stated in this connection that the Communist movement, .did not enter into the political field for the purpose of breaking up other Labor parties, certainly not to break-up the C.CF. party. The fact can, be pointed out that when the j (J.C.F. party was organized In I 1933, the Communist party ofj Canada had heen established for 12 years since 1921 and could i well have, raised the objection! that the C.Q.F. are doing now: "Why organize a party of Socialists when, we already have a parjty entrenched in every province .of Canada?" But we realized then that the C.CF. represented a. different school of socialistic thought from ours and, although we do not believe entirely in the theories of what we prefer to call Social Democracy, we were real ists enough to understand and not question the political rights of "the people who wished to follow the C.CF. doctrines. Not at this, or any time, do Communists wish to create more friction j'n the camps of Labor. We realize the urgen'. need of Labor, unity for th-present ahd the post-war problems and we will struggle or it in the future as. we have done in the, past. Bu$ we do pot believe that we must abandon pur theories and our rights to con tinue to organize sp the new Party of Communists is being organized here In Prince Rupert as well as in all cities and towns in Canada. The Communist movement Is well entrenched in every country and is growing steadily In Country. It can well be understood why reactionaries direct their, main attacks against the Communists. The Fascist ele-! ments are, in most instances, the spearhead of these attacks but t seems to us that a Labor party like the C.CF. should re train from joining In these at-I tacks. In conclusion, let us quote . a few words from Tim Buck's reply to Harold Winch's attack; "Our contribution to the dem ocratic development in Canada would be most effective if we could work in co-operation with these leftward moving progres sives who constitute the mem bership of the C.CF. Their aspirations coincide to -a marked degree wtlli ours and we could march a long way forward to the advantage of Canada and the worklnig class. Thanking you for your valu able space. W. II.
