By DOROTHY GARBUTT On Monday evening next at the Empress Hall Mryfin Thomas Is running an Amateur Hour. He has some grand prizes lined up and expects a good turn out Even If you can't speak a piece come out and be one of the audience. The performers do much better with the encouragement which comes of applause. Don't forget the Highway dance tonight which Is being held at the same camp as the last two dances. You remember, where we get the grand cocoa. The twelve piece navy band will be a feature of the evening. It is just a year ago this month since Captain Ai-mltage was here and gave us the treat of our lives with his one man show. And now he is back with us for this week end at the Capitol and the various camps during the week. The Captain Is a specialist In Dickens sketches.-He makes his characters come to life with a wlzardy that Is uncanny. There's never a dull minute in his show. And he is also a talented ventriloquist and sleight of hand expert. He gives his services In Canada exclusively to the YMCA and his travels during the past year sound like a leaf out of Marco Polo's note book. Last October after leaving us he went to West Virginia to fulfil contracts he had there, then for December he was playing to the outposts in Newfoundland. From there he flew to Hall-fax for Christmas and played there until the second week in February when he went to Tor-' onto and was the guest speaker at a banquet held by the National Council of the YMCA. From there he flew to Labrador, the Maritimes, Prince Edward Island and the Gaspe Peninsula. Back to Toronto and from there directly to Edmonton, going up the new Alaska Highway as far as Whitehorse and playing en route Fort Nelson (where he met my brother-in-law by the way), Fort St. John, Watson Lake and Grand Prairie. Vancouver was next and Victoria and all the outposts on Vancouver Island, then by gradual stages arid stopping at the various camps' to Rupert. From here he hopes to go to Alaska. What a trip! What a man! He must have the secret of eternal youth, for after a. trip that would kill most persons he turns up In Prince Rupert all smiles and as full as vim, vigor and vitality as old Grandpa Smallweed, one of his most popular interpretations.
