TILLIE THE TOILER SO TOU'RE SOItJ6 TO CAMP BUSBY, TS A Big CAMB lOqoocj FRONT LINE GENERALS MAJ.-GEN. C. R. S. STERN By DOUG HOW (Canadian Press Staff Writer) The typical Canadian field general is young and effective and he has a solid career of professional soldiering behind him. In none of these essentials does Maj.-Gen. Charles Ramsay Sterling Stein lack. The unknown of the 1st Canadian Army's three armored corps generals is the little, 46-year-old engin eer rrom yueoec uty wno tooK over in Britain the division left by Lt.-Gen. E. W. Sansom when he became a corps commander. He brokS in with the army as a sapper in 1914 and he has been moving up steadily ever since. For two months Gen. Stein was attached as an observer to the British division that made history by leading the 1st Army Into Blzerte In northern Africa. And some years ago he took a two-year course at the Imperial Staff College in Quetta, India. There he studied under the famous Lt.-Gen. Giffard Martel, great exponent of tank warfare. From those experiences, the general is in a position to give an expert opinion of the Canadians as they are shaping up in Britain. He says he has no doubt they will "acquit themselves as well in tanks as they have in the infantry, behind big guns, in planes and in fchlps." Gen. Stein's forte is a con science which makes him labor for success and a personality which makes subordinates quick to labor with him. His businesslike manner is exemplified in the yarn of his meeting with a tank during a scheme. He bark-, ed, "Where are you going?" The tank commander replied: "Im taking this road because it's easier going." "Easier going, hell," came back the general. "It's a quarter of a mile farther. Save petrol." In First Great War Born in Vancouver, 1897, of Lowland Scottish ancestry, Gen. Stein has a wife and son, William, 14, living in Quebec City. He was commissioned as an engineer officer in 1915 following his graduation from R.M.C. He fought In France and Bel-glum In the First Great War. Promoted captain In 1921, Gen. Stein studied at England's school of military engineering in 1921 and 1922, and later instructed at the Royal Military Academy for two years. He was confirmed as a lieutenant-colonel at the outbreak of war and commanded the engineer training school until proceeding to Britain for a round of tasks at C.M.H.Q. Gen. Stein moved to the field 100,000 MEM ' THERE'S SURE ID ONE . FALL as Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster - General of the division he now commands. A promotion to Brigadier put him over an armored brigade and his last post beforeiecomlng a general was as Brigadier of Lt.-Gen. A. G. L. McNaughton's staff at Army Headquarters. He has been a divisional commander since January, 1943.
