Salmon canning operations for the- 1943 season on the Skeena River got off to a quiet but orderly start during the past week following the opening of fishing with sockeye glllnets on Sunday night. A scarcity of fishermen was evident due,, no doubt, to the call of the war Industries at Prince Rupert and elsewhere. The natives, particularly, were slow In getting started but, at the end of the first week, the number of the fishermen on the Naas and Skeena Rivers was gradually building up. First week fishing averages per boat on the Skeena, River have been 15 to 20 fish, in Principe Channel (outside the Skeena River), 50 fish, and on the Naas River, 30 fish. Canning every other day In view of the Jight landings of fish, the canneries on the Skeena River have been all packing during th; first week of fishing with the exception of the new Nelson Bros. Fisheries Ltd. plant at Port Edward which is expected to get under way during the second week.
