Savoy's 35, Macey's 21 Rainmakers 42, Co-op 31 In the Junior opener of last night's basketball program Gyro set out to give the Junior High School their second successive loss of the season. The High S:hool students seem to be in a slump and many are waiting to see them win their first game Little Joe Haugan was high scorer for the game with 13 points. Final score was 1.9-12. The second game Intermediate saw Macey's go down for their second defeat of the week, the score being 35-21. The Savoy boys are really tearing along in high gear and have yet tr be beaten. Joe Davis played his usual good game and led the scoring with 15 points. Davis, in the last few games, for some reason cannot be stopped and does a lot of damage with his clean sweeping baskets. Young Rupe Holkestad again came through to lead his team with eight points. In the last few games Macey's have definitely been off and cannot seem to hit their old stride. Next week we hope to see Macey's turn the table and -win both their games. In the final fixture of last night's games the eager sports fans saw the Rainmakers rain out the cellar-holding Co-op to the score of 42-31. Last night s game saw the Forman-Hartwig-James line out in top shape and each set out to get 11. 12 and 14, respectively. Those who have noticed Donnie Hartwig playing lately were wondering what was wrong. Last night saw Don his old "Deadeye" self again. He went out to show the fans he was back in his old shooting form by racking up 12 well shot points. High scorer for the game was F. James with 14 points, followed by Qurvich of Co-op with 13 points. Bo-Me-Hi, now in second place, will meet the first-place Savoys on Tuesday night In the Armories. Macey's will play Coop, and Watts & Nlckerson will play High School in the Junior League. Box scores are as follows: Watts & Nickerson J. Haugan 13, H. Pierce, Sunberg 4, Lawrie 2, Moore, Sheir, Mostad. Total 19. Junior High School Boulter, T. James 4, Lein 6, Carlson, Ods-vick, Scharff. Prince Rupert, B.C '.. .7, I IS RADAR SEES DUCKS FOR HUNTERS The above chotopranli m.nv like the splitting of an atom, but I actually it is just another marvel of radar. Duck hunters who now , equip themselves with guns, shells, 'blinds," may in the future add to their equipment portable radar sets to detect their quarry in flight. I Depicted here is a reproduction I of what appeared on Trans-Canada I Air Lines radar cathode viewing screen at Winnipeg during the duck hunting season. Flight of ducks are ' I clearly discernible on the screen. , Recently at T.C.A.'s radar establishment, operators noticed tiny j objects moving across their view ing screens. i. s. btevens, supenr.- tendent of communications and I electronic development, said that at j fir?:t the objects on the screen were thought to. be small taainine craft Hoop Organizers Stuck LOCAL BASKETBALL IS STYMIED BY GYM FAMINE IN MIDST OF PLENTY Once again Prince Rupert has entertained very successfully a visiting basketball team and plans must go ahead for the furtherance of entertainment for many fans and a general revival of pre-war sport. Games have been tentatively scheduled with New Metlakatla, Ketchikan All-Stars and Petersburg and, if air goes well, the New West- minster Terminals, formerly the derful rehabilitation program Adnacs Adnacs will will be be asked asked to tc make make a a I belnS offered the country it will trip up this way. It is clearly evident, judging from the crowds attending the recent Hi -School series, that the "Y" gym, even though it be available around the beginning of Marclr, will be useless from a spectator standpoint and considerable alternations will have to be made before outside teams can play there. This brings up the question of who is responsible for the barring of the Navy Drill Hall and a concentrated effort will have to be directed by all service clubs In order that basketball, our most popular sport, may be carried on this winter. Early in the season an association was formed and league schedules were about to start when some chap in Ottawa got the idea that the five percent of the players who didn't see service in the recent mix-up were going to use the floor In contravention of orders so the other 95 percent were denied the right to operate their league unless they wanted to play alone and without civilian spectators. It is all a little rancid to put it mildly and if there is any Justification in the action of the govern ment in closing gyms when there is supposed to be such a won- "But they were so small they would fade out, then re-appear. Then we discovered these dots were ducks and geese. We picked them up at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000 feet? "At the peak of the season ther; were thousands of them. We touli closely trace their flight" Individual ducks can be picked out within a ten mile radius. When we take into consideration the fact that no less than nine of our senior . boys that played the Coast Guard have just recently returned irom the services the whole matter will take a lot of explaining. On the strength of the slim hopes they have of getting consideration from those in power and for the love of the game, the boys are going to continue practising until they have to give in and they are to be congratulated. In the meantime the intermediates will continue to operate their own league at the Sixth Avenue Armory where they are playing in full houses every Tuesday and Thursday. Coach Vanderee of the Coast Guard outfit that had-the tables turned on them by our boys after running twenty-three games without loss was all for a Sunday afternoon game after Saturday night's loss but, unfortunately, it was impossible so he had to head north and work on his excuses on the way home. He did admit before leaving though that we. have here the most formldible gang his boys have run up against this year and as far as fight and team THIS AND THAT U - . J r National Hockey Detroit On Climb Now Red Wings Defeat Rangers Uy Score of 4 to 2 , DETROIT 0 Detroit Red Wings have climbed to within four points of the third -place Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League. Last niirht at Detroit, the Red Wings knocked off the last-place New-York Rangers four to two before more than twelve thousand fans. At one time the Red Wings ,led the Rangers four to nothing. . They kept the Rangers off the s:ore sheet until the thirteenth minute mark in the. third period, i Grant Warwick broke the Ranger scoring famine and .with three and a half minutes to play Alt Pike bagged their second goal. Three of the four Detroit goals were scored in the first period and the other in the final frame. Right winger Fernand Gauthier scored twice, opening the, scoring in first and second period for Detroit. Eddie Bruneteau and Murray Armstrong sandwiched goals in between Gauth-ier's counters. The matter re gyms was explained just as far as it is possible to explain it and there the matter hangs. If the American Army authorities here could go so far as to re-open their ?ym in order tliat the High School students might pick up a few dollars to help them with their sports program it seems odd that nothing can be done about, the many Canadian gyms and, as mentioned before, it will take some explaining.
