MEMBER ABC. j (Aithorjied as Second Class Mall, Post Office J ;Jv Department, Ottawa). lIEW C.N. SHIP G' ANADIAN National Railways are gomg.to remain in the steamship ousiness-pn the Pacific Coast. This much is; clarified by the interesting announcement made last night that lenders have been opened from builders on both east and west coasts for i 350-f66t 5700-ton streamline designed vessel at an estimated cost jf $3,000,000. The well-guarded secret as to the Company's policy on Pacific Coast Steamships now being out, the next Question at Prince Rupert is naturally whether the company's own shipyard at this port, amply capable 6t S undertaking -such construction, Eias litfd at least a reasonable on-ioj'tunity of obtaining the big job. Td doubt there was keen competition for the shipbuilding plum vhich it is, gratifying should be kept ml Canada, 1 v, ? At least we are to have a worthy successor to the good old ship Prince George which met a fiery death last SeDtember at Ketchikan. Presumably other new Canadian National hips for this coast will come in due ime. j y CIRCULATION OF PAPERS IlEWSPAPER circulation in Can- ada in 1945 broke all previous Records and established a new all-timeybigh despite a continuing, tight Newsprint Situation and increased NATION'S HISTORY IS WELL RECORDED IN PUBLIC ARCHIVES Huge Collection of Canadiana j Is Housed in Mocerii Fireproof I Building in Ottawa OTTAWA, P) If in doubt ibout -any matter respecting panada's history, there is one place where you can be assured f getting & satisfactory answer -the Public Archives. 1 "We answer a great variety of said Dr. L. "They range from the influence of Voltaire's writings n Canada to a comparison of (he cost of transportation on tfhe Ottawa and St. Lawrence rjivers In 1800. We even act as genealogists to help people trace their antecedents." Contrary to the popular con- ije'ptlon of a depository for a na tion's records and historical documents, the Public Archives luildlng Is not a musty, cobwebby place- with creaky floors nd dim corridors; It Is a bright snd modern fire-proof structure. j : in the swPRz;.nv court op i; BRITISH COLUMBIA !' Here .in Prince Rupert the Daily News held up its " end in the general picture of increased newspaper popularity and service. It is satisfactory also for us to be able to announce that our circulation is holding up well this year in spite of the admittedly lessening population here. The inprecedented demand for newspapers, locally .as well as nationally, is caused by only one thing the desire of people to know the news as only the newspaper reports and explains it. This means that advertising in newspapers reaches more people, even here in Prince Rupert, registering more 'impressions than ever before and a powerful advertising medium becomes more powerful. V V j SIMPLE BUT TRUE LETTER WRITER to "Time" A puts very tersely and simply, we think, what is the matter with the world today- It well justifies repetition here, we think. So here it is: "Letters of servicemen and ex-servicemen, as well as others, during the last few months inquire rather pathetically why the postwar world is not the marvelous, really Christian postwar society which editorial writers and politicians ( promised us during the war. The answer is .obvious . . . Society will improve only when the individuals decide to improve not intellectually, or socially or economically or politically but morally and spiritually ... We of the postwar era are no more tolerant, unselfish, and no more disciplined in our behaviour than pre-1939 and far less so than pre-1900 ... "Until we see other aims in life besides . ., . making money and having a good time, usually at the expense of the qther guy. we can (be sure) that our civilization what's left of it is on the way gut." Proba'bly the most visited sec tion of the building ' Ls the museum. Open to the public every day, here are exhibited such diversified examples of Canadiana as the baby boots of General Wolfe, an autographed copy of Col. John McCrae's Im mortal poem "In Flanders' Fields," a large scale model of Ottawa as It will look .when City Planner G rover completes its beautiflcation, and bullets dug un on the battlefield of the Plains of Abraham. One of the museum's feature attractions'was the $20,000 dress worn by Queen Elizabeth on Their Majesties' Canadian tour in 1939. Last April ic was transferred to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. But the Archives' museum is not com pletely lacking in Royal apparel; they still have a costume worn by . Queen Victoria... Interesting Addition One of the latest additions to the museum Is the plan of the hiding place of the Coronation Stone, which was sent by the Dean of Westminster to Prime Minister King for safekeeping in the early months of the war. But the real record of Canada's history is contained In the library and map rooms of the Public Archives. This Is the Mecca for both the professional and amateur student of Canadian history. To help them in their research, the information section provides them with a superb Index system containing 2,250,000 cards. The 'books,( with handsome binding, are bound In the Archives' own bindery. The manuscript room contains Innumerable manuscripts, each sheet handwritten. Here can be found the original correspondence of the governors and in- tendants of the early French regime with their superiors in France. The map room has a sample of the work of every car tographer who ever practised his art in Canada. Particularly Interesting Is a copy of what is presumed to be the first map ever made. A reading room, open night and day is another facility which the Public Archives offers. There is also a photostatic room where copies of reasonable requests WELL POPULATED The number of hairs on an adult's head usually ranges from 129,000 to 150,000. i may. be obtained free of charge. Exhibiting modern Canadian cultural achievements is another service performed toy the Public Archives. At a recent exhibition of French-Canadian authors living In Ottawa, 0,000. people came In one week to see. the 219 books on display. On the base of the statue outside the building to Arthur a.
