"ri 6 B fl gtintt lltlpctt Daily JcUis Wednesday, April 24, 1946 MONOXIDE FUMES CLAIM LIVES OF ISLAND SEAMEN Carbon monoxide fumes from the engine of the mission boat Western Hope were responsible for the, deaths of two well known Queen Charlotte men who succumbed while the boat was tow-in? a raft of logs near Massett recently. Their bodies were found la the smoke-filled, vessel which had gone aground after the men had been overcome. Victims of the fatal accident were Fred Bellis and James Roughton of Massett. Mr. Bellis was a machine shop operator at the Island town and a brother of Norman Bellis of Prince Rupert. He was well known here. Bellis and Roughton in the Western Hope were assisting I John Patrick Locker to tow a irau oi logs irom i'on uiemenis to Massett when they were overcome by the deadly gas. Locker, who left the Western Hope In I his own boat, before the voyage was completed, told a coroner's Jury that while he had been aboard the mission vessel he had, begun to feel sick, and that Bellis had begun to act strangely, pre-, sumably from the effect of the. exhaust gas. j The' fatalities occurred on the I morning of April 16, near Wood- j en River, about seven miles from ' Massett. Following thq basketball game between Oceari Falls and Prince Rupert's Intermediates, the Teen-Agers are meeting in the auditorium of the Civic Centre and the big election for Teen -Town officials will take place. The election should provide plenty of excitement and result in close balloting as there arc a large number of candidates for offices of mayor, police chief and twelve aldermen. Following the election, there will be a dance in honor of the visiting girls' and boys' basketball teams. Admission to the auditorium for Prince Rupert Teen-Agers will be by Civic rCntre membership card. MEETINGS The Civic Centre is certainly the "meetlngest" place these days. Last nigh1;, meetings were held by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Drama Club of Booth Memorial High, and the Legion Boxing Committee. In addition, the Teen-Age room was filled, as usual with youngsters. There was a big crowd at the lacrosse game and patrons attended the National Film Board movie.
