The two services plan to use modern radar map-making techniques. The project may take 30 years. The RAJ, expects to sake five years to photograph the Commonwealth from the air: the army. IS years to co-ordinate ground data. The Army director of survey says that 99 per cent of Australia is still inadequately mapped in detail. The bulk of maps of set-tied areas are based on old and erroneous information prepared by out-tiated methods. By using radar between the mapping aircraft and the topographers, the ground surveyors' fixation range will be increased from about 30 miles to 200 miles. The plan is subject to Commonwealth government approval of a recommendation by the general staff that the Army Survey Corps be maintained at 10 times it ore-war strength of 50 men. - The Survey Corps, aided by R-AA-F. and UjB. Army Air Force photographers, mapped about IOOjGOO square miles in Australia and another 50.000 in the islands during the war. From the aerial surveys, the corps has built up in Melbourne a national library of more than 2J00.DO9 photographs. The corps printed for the Aus-traBan and TJ. S. forces 19.000.030 map sheets, mostly operational. Five minion of these maps were produced in the. field by mobile lithographic units.
