I i .i f r7 3 t ! 5$: Prince ttuncrt Daily T3clus Wednesday, February 20, 1946 NEW LIGHT FOR ' FUTURE HOMES i ! Glowing Color Schemes to He Applied to Whole House NEW YORK 0 The homes of I tomorrow generally will be smaller units than those today with large main rooms and small sleeping rooms, designed for the : -most comfortable living we ever v have had. Their decoration will feature more rich glowing color and architectural uses of light. ..,;.That comes from Miss Bertha Schaefer, New York interior decorator, specialist in the decorative use of glowing color, paintings and light. "The servant problem Is par- tially responsible for a trend to- :.ward less expansive living." said Miss Schaefer recently in her New York studio-gallery. "This does not indicate that all city dwellers will be squeezed into .. two and three-room apartments. But it does indicate there will be fewer eight and twelve-room ., units and more of four or five rooms. Furniture will be decidedly functional, such as a .dining table that Is also a lib rary table or desk or that has , . a game table top. "In decoration we shall make more and unusual use of light, often using It architecturally. For instance, where you wish that a wall were not, you can 'eliminate' it by making it glow. It can be hung with pale colored curtains, lit from above with concealed fluorescent light so that It becomes a wall of light. Powerful light in lamps will be filtered through metal fins, which deflect It to certain objects. Rtth Colors To. He Used ' mili.f'Instcadof monotone rooms nll'gray. all blue, etc. we shall .-make much greater use of rich glowing color. And Instead of Considering only the 'color jheme of a room, we shall con-rtider the color scheme of a rflgise. "For. instance, In a house which I decorated recently, the walls of the large entrance hall were scafoam green with touches of white and strong green. On one side this led to a room with seafoam green paint and tan gerine accents; on the other side to a living room whose soft green background was .offset by brilliant chintzes in red, yellow and blue. These rooms, varied a3 they were, were tied together by the repetition of green." Miss Schaefer, a decorator of years standing and a member of the American Institute of Decorators, combines her 57th . Street studio for Interior design with an art gallery featuring the work of modern painters and pottery designers. MIRRORS CREATE SPACIOUS EFFECT Make I'se of Full TTinuows At Winter Furniture Show CHICAGO O Ideas for furnishing a house in a way that will make it appear more spacious as well as attractive were featured at the winter furniture show here This was done In many exhibits by using full windows and massive mirrors. Floor coverings were extended the full size of the room. Low chairs were used to create an illusion of height. Novel pastel color combinations played their part, too, in "stretching" a house. Such was an exhibit created by Mabel Schamberg of Chicago and Dorothy Draper of New York. Their exhibit exemplified the d tuna tic and individual touches given to nany modern designs. Ebony-finished bookcases and a Honduras, mahogany cocktail table with a black glass ton set before a sofa slipcovered in green and white striped material with a huge mirror above the loun?e was an example of their idea of homefurnlshlng.
