A.i CLOSER RUNS-When the Ski Club decided to build a cabin out the highway last sprln?. the members believed that they had hit the best skiing country available. Yesterday's skiing on Old-field and Hays convinced them that Blaine's slopes have nothing in .comparison to the easily 1 accessible runs that are right in 1 our own backyard. Despite the j warnin? in this column last Frt-' day that skilers and hikers be ready to spend the full day in the open there were close to 30 people who ventured out in search of sunshine, fresh air and winter sport. It would be advisable for anyone 2oing up in the future to be prepared for real 1 winter weather at the top wear heavy winter boots (preferably high topi, sloves. warm clothing, and pack a thermos of coffee or something hot. Next week there will be signs posted showing the trails leading to the runs. It should be remembered that, due tc the presence of military Installations, the Air Force camp and buildings are still out of bounds to all. SHORT RUNS During last week over a foot of snow had fallen on top and it remains ideally dry and powdery. Over a dozen people were up to take in the magnificent view, snap a few pictures and make a pleasant afternoon hike. About 20' others were there strictly for skiing and had Just what they were ! looking for. On Saturday after-1 noon Don and Bob Eby took Art ; Vandersen, the coach of the Coast Guard basketball team from Ketchikan, out to the run. Art hails from New York and claims that, if these slopes were available to easterners, they would be swarming with enthusiast! The entire Alex Mitchell family toured from their camp across I the mountain 10 see the magnificent slopes we have been bragging about. Not to be outdone, six of our hardy skiers returned the visit later and made it across in an hour. They found more ! potential ski ground all along the I way. If we ever have a ski meet. and don't think we won't, that will make an Ideal cross country run. Dr. Munthe's two nieces showed the boys a heap of hot skiing in the afternoon.
