It will also fulfil a long standing moral obligatibn to the people of the Peace River; "The lirie from1 Peace River to Prince Rupert would be only 580 miles whereas today it was 1400 miles to Vancouver. The propWd extension of the Pacific Great Eastern could never fill the outlet' need for tHe great north bank of the Peace" River ocuntry which had never known a crop failure but which was greatly hampered through lack of outlet. Mr. Applewhaite went' on to develop the1 riew transcontinental railway line project of 1805 miles between Pririce Rupert arid' Churchill, a' line which would also he directly tributary to Winnipeg. Turning tb a ma he pointed to the three sole gaps which remained .to make1 that line complete, Meadow Lake to Lac In Blche and Boyle to Smith oil the prairies and'Hlnes Creek to HaKelton on the wes a total distance In gaps of but 525 miles. Starting with the conception of its riecessity by the late Major Gert; J. Ml Qriesbach, then inspector-general, who' in June 1942 had seen a parade of the local home guards whom he resolved should be properly armed artd equipped. Col. Johnston traced the history of the regiment from its inception in February 1943! He coriirriended the entHuslasm' and' achievements of the uhlt. one of the most valu able functions of which had bn the training of many men who had gone into the active forces. It had also stood ready to de fend Prince Rupert' should the emergency have arisen. Another event of the evening was the presentation of a utility case to Capt. Burnlp by R.Q S.Mi Hawthorne Graham as a token of appreciation and esteem. A display of physical training. gymnastics and boxing, showing tne accomplishments of boys ol the unit under training of Sat. G. R. WatrrtougM, was also interesting. Taking part In the boxing were Don Prendersasf vs. Sandy Hamilton, Ronnie Ache-son vs. John Basso; Glen Carlson vs: Sgt. Watmough. The regimental band, under the direction of Sgt'. Peter Lien, provided music during the evening and there was also community singing directed by Capt. J. A. Teng. A showing of moving pictures rouhded out the program. Refreshments, arrangements for which were made by the Women's Auxiliary, were served throughout the evening. "Build B.C. Because these are the vitamins which make for strong bones and teeth Pacific Milk adopted the process to make this a finer food for children. PACIFIC MILK "Irradiated and Vacuum Packed" way companies, would, of course, oppose such a line, arid shipping route, admitted Sir. Applewhaite. Naturally tliey would' be afraid of a route that would divert traffic from present routes. ll'ut why should tlieir objections be sustained when such great benefits as the opening of a vastly ricli stretch of territory and a new route between .United Kingdom anil Continent were to be obtained at such little cost? "Let us fight for the development of the north through northern ports'," Mr. Applewhaite appeaied. "We have come to the conclusion," he said, "that It is a waste o( time to approach the Canadian National Railway which is not at all Interested in the development of the north. So let us brins con stant, persistent and vigorous pressure to bear upon the Dominion government. Who carries out the project Is a matter of secondary Importance. The main point is to get the line built and get on with the development of Canada." The speaker strongly urged such organlzatioas as the service clubs to get behind the Peace River outlet plnject In any way they could. The talk was followed by an Interesting period of discussion, manifesting the Interest of the service club members. President W. D. Lamble was In the chair and several guests In cluded C. II.
