An Increase was shown in the juvenile section, the figures being 3,454 as against 3,348 in the preceding year. There was a considerable decrease in borrowers during the year. Cards issued In 1945 were 487, as against 718 In 1944, and cancellations amounted to 1.451. This large cancellation is due in part to the fact that many borrowers had been inactive for some time and in the yearly re vision of the files their cards were removed. The present figure of 1,956 represents active borrowers. The decrease on the whole Is, of course, due to there having been a drop in the population. "The increase in the juvenile section is very gratifying as we have made a particular effort to rebuild the chlldren'3 department, and it would appear that our efforts are beginning to bear fruit," said the report. "This Is the second year the Juvenile section has shown an increase after a continuing decrease over many years. Our young borrowers seem to appreciate the new tyDe of books Dur- chased for their section, whiqh are mainly books in an educational vein, such as volumes on handicraft, the children's classics, historical tales, geographical storjes, etc. "An item of considerable im portance to the Library was the purchase of the latest edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica for use in our reference room. We were fortunate enough to find a purchaser for the old set. "In the late summer a vast number of books, many of them being very worthwhile, were purchased for a nominal sum from the day rooms of the American Army. Mrs. Arnold, chairman of the Library Board, was .kind .enough to go over the books with me and arrange for their purchase. "The Library was the recipient of a gift of $25.00 from the Canadian Club, which donation 1 was gratefully acknowledged. A number of books by Canadian authors for adult and clldren's sections was purchased with this sum. The Canadian Author and Bookman periodical was also subscribed for at the request of the Canadian Club. "A gift of three new periodicals chosen by the Prince Rupert Ladles' Reading Club was presented to the Library. The magazine order has gone in and will prove a very satisfactory addition to the reading room. "Several outstanding and up-to-date books were received during the year as gifts from the libraries of borrowers. These are much appreciated and have proved very acceptable to our readers. Deputy Registrar of Titles priation from the city for the year was set at $400, which waa used for the purchase of new books and to cover the cost of re-blnding used volumes. Need For New Building Felt "Some very necessary repairs were done on the front and basement steps of the Library during 1945. It had been planned to Improve and enlarge the interior of the building but ma terial was scarce and labor shortage acute. It trust, however, that this work will be done without delay as our present space is Inadequate. We are un able to put many of our books on the shelves, there being simply no room for them. "Appeals for discarded books came from parties In Smithers and Port Clements during the latter part of the year. Both requests were complied with as we had many dlscaids and duplicates and were only too pleased to find a home for them. Letters of grateful acknowledgment were received from both parties, upon arrival of the books." RECEPTION HERE FOR MR. AND MRS.
