Priiirc Utiprrt'DaflK rartus Monday, December 16, 1946 ffOOP TALK ..Now that the election suspense "is over our citizens are anticipating the outcome Of Prince Rupert's yearly basketball classic On Tuesday and Wednesday the New Metlakatla basketball squad will again visit the city to tangle with the local All 'Stars at the Civic Centre gym. New Metlakatla is a small Alaska village where basketball players are made players like Wally Leask, former captain of the Washington Huskies and now on a Seattle pro roster. There might also be mentioned in passing Wally's brothers, Bert and Ronnie, Dubuque University captain, and all-Alaska centre respectively; Boy Bolton, a Washington semi-pro, and Johnny Marsden, All - Pacific Ccast High School and also All Alaskan. All these, boys have left their mark where this ball game is tops and the list doesn't end there. This year New Metlakatla are ng.ain expecting to show with a crack team. They recently trounced the Ketchikan team that the local boys found so difficult to handle. Although the Jocals have been successful in winning the odd game from these Alaska, teams they have yet to win a home-and-home series. Last year, after beating M E R.R:Y CHRIST M A S Sffirt . ' ' " -, .TU.TI i ' f. 7TFJ1 WiICYIClt 1 SPORTING GOODS KAIEN HARDWARE PH0NE8 the Metlakatlans decisively at the Roosevelt gym, they dropped two close calls on their visit north. This year the Prince Rupert team premises a different last act. They confidently proclaim their ability to not only win at home but to duplicate their vic tories when they travel after the New Year. This contention Is based on the fact that they have a better club than previously a club conditioned by two month's of competitive practice in league games and bolstered by the best cf the younger talent., Stripping in 99's flashy new outfits, which Coach Art Murray promises will be on hand Monday, Prince Rupert will be represented by Sonny Bsynon, Bob Houston, Jack Lindsay, Sev Demlnatq and Angus MacPhee. veterans of every Metlakatlan tussle since the International series tfaS resurrected in 1936, and Joe Davis, Don Hartwig, Boyo Gurvfch, Elmer Clausen and George Viereck, new blood that definitely will not be play-In? their last game as Prince Rupert's basketball select. Latest word from the north Is that New Metlaklata is bringing a powerful squad down from Alaska and is a very likely squad to overcome our local champions. As this is to be one of the best teams to 'have come out zt New Metlakatla in a long fritwad e6 a ' Kencath the lighted trees, eager children unwrap their precious gifts.
