In the first place, he announced the splendid record of collection of . city taxes which had been achieved in 1945 when all but $8,534.93 had come in. There had been a surplus of $28,000 on operating account last year with $15,-000 for the water reserve and $3300 on telephone. Garbage collection was still a headache but the deficit had been reduced from a maximum of $14,949.31 in 1943 to $6,038.55 in 1945. The expenditures In this department last year had been $23,397.89 and receipts $17,359.33 as compared with respective figures of $29,030.59 and $14,081.28 in 1943. Speaking of streets, Mr. Daggett declared that, as a result of new equipment that had been purchased last year at a cost of $10,324.98 and this year at $11,-149.12, the city was now in a position to proceed with actual street improvement. Although no final agreement had yet been reached on the matter of federal compensation for war damage, something might be expected this year. New items of equipment which the mayor mentioned included compressor, rock crusher, dump truck, grader, asphalt and sand spreader. ' The mayor, in opening, had acknowledged the excellent work over the years of the Gyro Club in playground and park development. President W. D. Lambie was . , , , .
