MacSWEEN, First Presbyterian Church Many years ago a shepherd poet watched the glory of the sunset fade into the wonders of the starry night and he took up his crude lyre and. composed a song: The heavens declare the clorv of Get j the firmament showetlvHis handiwork." Without this basic assumption, the whole structure of modern scientific thought would fall apart. Surely it requires no great In tellect to proceed from the recognition of law. to the conviction that behind' the law stands a Lawgiver. In spite of differ ences in terms and concepts, and sometimes quite unconsciously, the average man Is a believer In God. Jesus took such belief for granted. He did not argue .the existence of God. Neither does the Bible. Jesus has. a message for those who come to It with open minds and humble hearts but for those who come In their own conceits and in the, precon ceived opinion that it Is all nonsense It has like Jesus, only sllenre. But Jesus was not content to hear men .admit that they be lieved In God. He knew how little such statements usually Indicate. True religion is much more than a mere verbal assent. It Is also more than a matter of fol lowing out certain courses of conduct and avoiding vital and dynamic relationship with God, nor does It ever lead to the sort of life In which there Is consid eration for others and a desire fcr Justice and mercy In human affairs. Jesus heard their confident as surances that they believed in God, and then he startled them out of their self-content. "Ye be lleve in God. Believe also in Me." 'It was that challenge which brought upon Him the wrath of the Synagogue: thev said "He CREDITi HOUSE. OF QUALITY" I w DESIGNER INSPIRED JOHANNESBURG tf) The grace of the silver tree, the dignity of the protea, the greenery of the Cape Peninsula have caught the Imagination of the dress designer, Yannl Evangel-Idl of Athens. Inspired by shapes and coloring, Evangelidl, who came to South Africa with the Greek royal family, has designed his own materials and made some lovely clothes. Victory Day last year stirred Evaneelldl's imagination. He created a special Victory gown, the material patterned with springbok, native huts and trees His ,?owns have been shown In Capetown and Johannesburg. From here they will be taken to New York. Evangelidl Is of the opinion that South Africa is a country that Is "coming, on top." South African women, he says, dress well for the day time and for fport, but that grace and glamor are lacking at night. LONDON ffl Thirty thousand R:A.F. and Dominions airmen are still reported missing over Europe and four mobile units of the R.A.F.'s Missing, Research and Inquiry Service still are combing the continent for clues as to their fate. maketh himself equal with God" and they .were quite right. "He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father." No man cometh un to the Father but by Me." These and many other declaration? leave no doubt as to the nature of the claims. He made and, because of HLs claims, they crucified Him. ! However, there were some who accepted the challenge. Most of these were quite ordinary people. Some were poor and unlearned, Others, like Nlcodemus, were important personages. Saul of Tarsus was an intellectual giant of tireless energy. That little group was the nucleus of the glorious company which now extends through almost every nation on earth and shares a common faith, which is stated most simply In the words of the Ukrainian Christians: "Jesus Is Lord." And what difference that company of believers has made In this world, because of their faith! There Is scarcely a spot on earth where the Influence of the Man af Nazareth l.s not felt. Is not felt. It Is only where men and nations have deliberately turned their backs on Him that we see the sort of world that would, prevail apart from Christianity. It Is painted In Ihe blood and flame of Bataan and Belsen and Bnchenwald. ,Ye believe in God. "Ye do well," said James he apostle, "so do the devils and they tremble." So did the Pharisee! So does the Mohammedan! So did the Nazi, according to his own declaration. But that sort of belief did not and cannot save them or the world from a cold legalism, from moral degeneration, or from brutal passions. And the respectful acquiescence of our average citizen In the proposition that somehow, somewhere, there must be a Supreme Being, Is. not to be confused with the Christian faith. Pious phrases, respectful liturgies and an amiable Indifference to the demands of God are simply not enough. And they will never suffice to establish that ondltlon which .we profess to desire and which we loosely term a "Christian world." Jesus calls men to go beyond these things; and follow) Him. If you have, any doubts as to what that means, ecall the names of Simon Petef and Paul the Apostle, of Augustine and Luther, Calvin and '(nox. and .In our time, BcrrgraV md. Nlemoller. These men knew what It cost to accept the chal lenge of Jesus. But these are the men who have transformed the spirit of the world. Through them and their kind we enjoy today some measure of liberty and decency and brotherhood. By their loyalty they have preserved for us the message of Jesus which brings hope for a better iworld In this life and In that .which Is to come. The service of Jesus Christ Is no flight of fancy to be Indulged at Christmas, Easter and other favorable occasions. It Is no academic thing, but a matter of consecrating our lives to Ills .leadership 24 hows a day, seven days a week, and making all our actions .and decisions stand the test of His Presence.
