Johnson, 21& Eighth Avenue West, who is just home from the Far East theatre. He served as a wireless air gunner with the command ship a Liberator bomber of a Royal Canadian Air Force squadron which was attached to the Royal Air Force and took an active part In the air operations which were an Integral part of the campaign which resulted in the Tecapture by the Allies during the first six months of 1945 of such Important cities as Man-dalay, Rangoon and Bangkok. When the Japanese folded up in August he was at the Coecs Islands where the squadron was preparing to take part in a campaign for the Allied restoration of Singapore, the Malay States and Sumatra. Through this career he came unscathed and is now home on discharge leave .preparing to resume his duties with the Northern British Columbia Power Co. A member of Class '42 at Booth Memorial High School here, Johnson took his training with the Royal Canadian Air Force at Boundary Bay and in September 19.44 left for overseas, a three weeks' trip to England being followed by a 31-day, voyage to Bombay whence a Dakota transport took the personnel of Squadron 35C to Calcutta en-route to the base posting at Saltan!, 100 miles north of Cal-tmtta. Established at SalbonI, a six months' campaign of systematic bombing commenced, the local boy taking part In twenty-seven trips over objectives In Burma, concentrating on the Burma-Slam Railway and actively par ticipating In the reduction ol such cities as Mandalay, Rangoon and Burma. Knocking out of railway bridges, strafing of rolling stock, pounding of military objectives In the storied cities of the Far East all were part of the day's work. Narrow Escape In Crash Landing 'ft !was on June 1, on coming back into SalbonI after the twenty-seventh and last trip during which they had a hot time in shooting up a Jap tanker and two destroyers In the Gulf of Siam, that their Ship "Madame X" made a 'crash landing on the air field and the local boy had his closest call. The ship had been badly battered by anti-aircraft fire J. L. CURRY CHIROPRACTOR If pain Chiropractic! She had thirty or forty machine gun holes as well as a hit from an anti-aircraft shell which blew out the catwalk Fuel lines were shot up there was only 40 gallons of fuel left after the 1300-mile flight. With crash Imminent, the commanding officer had ordered his crew into the back of the ship and, as a result, the lives of all were saved when the ship, being set down skilfully, dug in by the nose to be later written off as a total loss. Answering questions as to the details of operaUonal flying In the area, John told a Dally News querist that It was mostly ground defence which had to be contended with and It was usually 'most Inaccurate. Seldom did the Japanese come up to fight although three Tojos did make an attack on the squadron one time at Rangoon, all being shot down for theij trouble. Most of the bombins: was by 500 and 1000-pounders at altitude usually around 100G feet. Throughout the campaign Johnson flew with Wing Commander Brian Sparks of Windsor. Indeed they started out together from Boundary Bay In September 1944 and it was s sad day last July at Coco; Island when the "skipper" died j of infantile paralysis which he had evidently contracted before leaving India. With the conclusion of the war In the Far East, the squad ron was shipped to Britain by way of Ceylon, through hidia, the Red Sea, Suefc and the Mediterranean. After a three monthV wait In Britain, passage . across the Atlantic was made on the trooper Scythla, landing at Hall-fax February 1. John arrived home early last week. A former meter reader, he Is now joining the power company line crew. Next year he plans going to University 'of British Columbia to take up electrical engineering. John Is not the only son of Mrs. Johnson to have served in the war. A younger boy, Pete, has been in the Royal Canadian Navy a little more than a year, now being aboard H.M.C.S.
