Ah, outline of the Normandy operation, in which he landed Ch D-Day as commander of the Canadian Seventh Armored Brigade, was given to the Prince Rupert Rotary Club Thursday afternoon by Brig. A. R. Wyman, now Canadian National Railways Industrial agent at Vancouver. Brig. Wyman said that the thtenslve preparation for the operation, like "Operation Trousers," In which the troops embarked from the English coast to make a landing on a selected spot further along the coast under "almost real" invasion conditions, was a great factor in the success of the real operation. - "It was a orimarv factor in . avoiding confusion in the Normandy landings when things (JVir.'t jo Jr.st as they were planned," he said. However, as Arthur Bayne, courthouse gardener, will testify, it takes a lot of trouble to keep it that way. Anticipating the floral summer glory which makes the court house grounds one of the most attractive places In the city, Mr. Bayne already has more than 5,000 plants under growth In his greenhouse, and still has a lot. to plant yet. The present return of winter, which most Prince Rupert people Cry to Ignore, poses some pretty strenuous problems for Mr. j Bayne. Among them is that of keeping n -glass rooted greenhouse at an even 70 degree temperature while wet snow slithers down the glass. . ' Anyone seeing Mr. Bayne, obviously headed for work about 10 o'clock In the morning, need not bother to lift an eyebrow at his late rising for the truth 1: that he probably has already been at work at least twice previously that morning. To keep the greenhouse heated to the temoeraturt reoulred by tender plants is a 24-hour job in coir1 weather, 'especially with a coal-fired heating unit. "The greenhouse cools quicklv on account of its glass roof," he said, "and I have to keep the temoerature up so the plant' won't be nipped. In the dajcime, Mr. Bayne is busy transplanting the myriad of young flowers which he Is preparing for summer planting. Exactly how many thousand flowers Mr. Bayne will plant this year he doesn't know but he calculates that he has about 5.000 tlevloping at present. "There are a lot that I haven't Planted yet," he added. He has his planting schedule irransed ?o that his first blooms pansles will bloom in May but the bulk of glorious color will come into full effect early 'n July. With more help this vear. he plans that his grounds will be more like their pre-war beauty. He thinks that snapdragons re among the best plants for Mils climate, althouph he has many other varltles as well. In he almost solid green of yoiing 'oliase in the greenhouse he has i counle of mauve and pink snapdragons which developed from last year's plants. Exclusive of his growing stock, he cultivates the winter blooms just because. he likes color. The lupins, of which Mr. Bayne Is very proud, will come ! from seed saved since. 1940 and which after their five year sleep have germinated 100 per cent Mr. Bayne saved the seed from pre-war stock In a glass jar. His pansles. which were sown last August and will bloom In May, are of the gia,iit variety and will burst forth in 4-lnch blooms. His pride In these blooms Is tine-tured with resprct for their high pedigree. "The cost of raising flowers, even for the amateur," he says, "Is not the cost of the seed, but In growing the seed. I advise nvne who Is going in for gardening to buy only the best seeds If he wants outstanding flowers. Good, pedigreed seed costs a little more, but the difference Is not great. You must stare with good seed," However, Mr. Bayne does not start from seed every year. A good portion of his plants are propagated. For instance, his dahlias, which are famous for their size and color on the couri house grounds,, are about 25 per cent propagated, while the balance is grown from seed. Snapdragons, wnich he thinks are one of the best blooming plants for Prince Rupert, at present dominate the growing boxes in ve greenhouse. Planted In late December, they will blcom In early July. To Illustrate Mr. Bayne's reliance on them, he says that he plans to plant about 1.500 of them In the beds Immediately in front of the court house. "People sometimes come In here and ask mt why : am growing 20 or 40 boxes of snapdragons or dahlias," he commented. "Well, the answer is lhat if I planted 50 or a hundred Wooms they would be so sparse that they wouldn't be seen when I put them out on the grounds. It takes thousands. I like color." A gardener since his early boyhood. Mr. Bayne had a word of caution to anyone planning to go In for serious raising of flowers.
