After a few months the young woman brought the figures to the boss and explained that she i was resigning, because she couldn't afford to work. There are some women who are better qualified for business, who can "make a real contribution to society outside the home. These women should be able to hire qualified persons to run their homes and take thus aided would Increase th care of their children during the national income so that the total revenue to the government would be greater. It's a free country, and I believe qualified women should 'not be required working day, with a proper pro-1 vision in their Income tax recognizing this expense. "The working mother has enough problems already. The government should, not add another In refusing her a fair tax exemption. I believe In encouraging individual enterprise, whether It be in the case of a man or a woman. One of the most Important freedoms in our national economy Is freedom to work." "Our Canadian policy and plan should be to Increase production in every possible way. Turn out vast quantities of products from the farms, factories, mines, forests and fisheries. Make good shortages those bottle-necks of produc tion. Make things plentiful, good and cheap; not scarce, poor and dear." Experts Important In Prosperity "Employment and business conditions in Canada are dependent to at least 25 per cent on a prosperous export trade. Mr. Gordon said. "To date, thers has not been much advance in restoring real world trade by International controls and jnach- lnery and It would be a mistake to conclude that trade Is going to be handed to us by whatever machinery the United Nations Organization sets up. "Canadian manufacturers have bcn sending representatives to practically all countries open to travellers, seeking markets for Canadian products," Mr. Gordon reported. "They are searching all over the world for outlets for surplus goods which can be mared by Canada. Many are hunting for future markets rather than for existing markets. They are getting many requests for Canadian products which they cannot fill because they have nothln; to spare after satisfying Canadian needs and supplying devastated countries with food and other necessities. Trie question of payment Is a very real problem," Mr. Gordon continued. "If the policy of sell ing abroad only for cash In ad vance had been adopted, there would have been a sudden and serious decline In production and employment, followed by a de pression. There Is no alterna- tlve. We have to continue producing and exporting, largely on credit, taxing ourselves and adding to the national debt In the hope that, eventually, we shall win through ind regain our position In normal International trade." Control System- Prices and Wajes The C.M.A. has supported wartime controls of prices and wages on the understanding that these controls would .be modified or abolished as soon as the national Interest would permit, said Mr. Gordon. "The control system In this country has been one of the best in the world, but the control of costs, including wages, has not been enforced with the same rigidity as the control of prices. "The result has been that costs, of which wages are a large factor, have risen in most departments of production, while the selling prices pf the goods into which these costs enter, have been kept down. "In the end," Mr. Gordon said, more people are Interested In prices than In wages because every citizen Is a buyer. If wages, the largest element of cost, are forced upward by pressure, noth ing can prevent rise? In prices and the people of Canada, being all buyers, wlii resent extensive additions to their ccst of living. "Whatever has happened since the war ended and whatever may happen In the future. It Is well to remember what mi'?ht be happening now If we had been defeated," Mr. Gordon said. "It should be our endeavour to retain the same Ideals, to continue similar efforts and to maintain the rame national cooperation that sustained us in war and guided and cheered us chward to the final victory."
