One was on timber, Canada's great natural resource, and the other 0n water. The first, supplied by the National Film Baard of Canada, .showed the growth of a town tlirough the lumbering Industry and then its decay to a ghost town as the result or lire. The sreat importance of the timber industry in providing varied woik for many families was well shown as was the pleasure provided by the game whose existence depended on the forests. The terrible havoc caused by fir and the resulting loss of work and destruction of a progressive settlement were graphically illustrated. The second film entitled "Water, Friend or Enemy," was u Walt Disney feature provided by the Provincial Board of Health. It showed very effectively the value of an ample and pure water supply. It showed equally effectively the dangers from an impure water supply and the ways in which water i niisht be made dangerous. Local 1-357, asked for the support of the New Westminster city council in the current strike, each alderman in turn fell back on the plea that such a request could not be granted because he "did not know all the facis" or the case. Now we have the Prince Rupert city council refusing to protest the lifting of price controls because It Is not "In possession of sufficient data" on the subject. Surely it is the most important duty of all elected representatives to keep informed about issues which deeply affect the Uvea of the citizens In the community. Is this leadership? The working man Is not surprised when this plea of Ignorance comes from the old line parties. He realizes that It is Just another way of saying, "I'm not going to do anything about it." In other words, when he is met by this "I haven't enough facts" excuse," he recognizes It as a lame excuse foi inaction, the familiar "run-around." But we have labor representatives on the Prince Rupert city council. It is their responsibility to sneak up when labor's living standards are threatened by the rising cost of living. When they evade issues In this manner they harm the cause of labor The warning note, was sounded in the last civic election when Labor lost seats on the council. I would suggest that the members of the council discuss this question with housewives. During the past weeks I have been going from door to door with a petition asking the government to restore price ceilings. Each housewife signed eagerly for she Is really indignant about the rising prices. She has sufficient data her housekeeping money won't buy as muchl At no home did the woman of the house feel that this question was too deep for her. The general feeling was, "I's high time something was done about it." I can't say, of course, If they meant anything as drastic as a resolution to Ottawa from our city council. By submitting to the pressure of big business interests to remove price controls gradually Gi we P F D D Radio Dial l i I l 1240 Kilocycles (Subject to change) WEDNESDAY P.M. 4:00 Your Music 4:30 Pops On Parade 4:45 The Frasers 5:00 Let There Be Music 5:30 Hawaiian Echoes 5:45 Supper Serenade 6:00 CBC Nqws 6:15 CBC News Roundup 6:30 Fashions In Music 8:45 To be announced 7:00 Let's Play Charades 7:30 Invitation to Music 8:00 Sports Commentary 8:15 Juliette 8:30 Triple Threat 9:00 CBC News 9:10 B.C.
