Although the Reds are strong on catching, Giles notes that fewer catchers are coming up to the big time. And he says those that are coming up are Inferior to the crop which emerged from the minors In the thirties. Giles blames the Minor Leagues for the situation. He says that back in the late thirties, Major League teams would want to send young catchers back to the minors for more experience but were told: "Don't send us kid catchers. We need old timers."
