Night Calls Green 787 Black 8G1 Blue 170 Choristers Make Debut Prince Rupert's newest Musical Group .Make Good Initial Impression The United Choristers, Prince Rupert's newest singing organization, consisting of talent from ' the church choirs and other mixed choral groups of the city, under the direction of the veteran local conductor, Peter, Lien, after several weeks of assiduous practice, made its initial public appearance in recital lass night at First Presbyterian Church. The proficiency displayed evoked the spontaneous plaudits of a large audience which was generous in its expression of appreciative approval. While the program centred around the offerings of the choir of 22 voices 15 women and eight men it was embellished by the piano offerings of talented Miss Frances Moore, A.T.C.M., and the vocal solos of always popular Dr. R. Q. Large and enlivened by a recently organized new concert orchestra whioh gave a creditable account of itself. The program, featuring semi-classical and sacred music, opened on an inspiring note with the presentation of the grand number, "The Lost Chord," which was possibly the best executed number of the whole "list to follow. The combined dual accompaniment of organ (Mrs. E. J. Smith) and piano (Mr. Llenl added greatly lo the tonal effects. Following was the "Dear Land of Home" item from Sibe-lius's "Finlandia" which gave the choir opportunity to effect tlvely display its rdnge. Gounod's psalm, "By Babylon's Wave," was fine in the women's section but suffered through the quan titative although not the quail-' tative weakness of the men. Rounding out the first part of the program as far as the choir was concerned were three varied numbers Knight's ballad, "Drink so Me Only With Thine Eyes'; Dvorak's spiritual, "Going Home" from the New World Symphony" and Chrlstiansen'3 ! Most ambitious number was the Norwegian Viking, singing story Qrclg's "Land Sighting," the vocal tale of, the ascent of Olov, the f Iras Christian king of Norway, in 995, which made a rousing finale in which the choir and orchestra combined with a special score arrangement by the late John Loftus of this city who had hoped to take part himself but whose death Intervened. Dr. R.' G. Large was the soloist. The orchestra presented an Interesting medley of southern airs arranged by Ascher-Mahl and. entitled "Dreams of the South." It won a hearty expression of approval and had to respond to demands-for an encore even though Conductor Lien had announced the group had been formed so recently that It had only the one number. Miss Moore's selections, rendered in her characteristically fine manner, were the melodious "Peer Gynt" numbers" "Morning Mood" and "To Spring," giving play to the young artist's fine talents of touch and interpretation, and a complicated but interesting Liszt .transcription of Verdi's "Rigoletto" which presented the performer with opportunity pf which she took full advantage to display her powers of technique. McDowell'3 dainty "Wild Rose" was a happy encore. Dr. R. G. Large's "The Sands of Dee" (Frederick Clay) received a1 well deserved demand for an encore which was complied with in the sprightly little ballad "Susan Is Her Name." Accompanist for the evening was Mrs. E. J. Smith who was, as usual, competent and discriminating In her exacting duties. Rev. A. F. MacSween acted In happy vein as chairman and announcer.
