Howard says several thousand j persons forced their way into the j soccer stadium by tearing down a fence after '0,000 persons al- ready had packed the stadium. I Howard says the gate crashers created pressure by surging forward with the result that two steel barriers collapsed. With the collapse of these barriers, erected to restrain standlns spectators, thousands of persons tumbled from their standing positions, many falling on spectators on a lower tier. The world gasped 17 years a;ro yesterday when Major II. O. D. Segrave set a new racing auto speed record of 231.36 miles an hour on, the hard sands of Daytona Beach, Fla. But this was beaten by Sir Malcolm Campbell in Utah in 1935 with 301.13 miles and hour and by John Cobb, also in Utah, In 1930 with 363.85 miles an hour. Next? Howie Morenz, then 31. Stratford, Ont., centre man "with the Montreal Canadiens, was voted by sports writers as the fastest player In the National Hockey League 13 years ago today. Howie was numbered as one of hockey's all-time greats before he died of a heart attack January 28, 1937. at the age of 35. It was a fine show in impressive testimonial to the remarkable progress which has been made in I this new and highly valuable field of community activity sine? its Inception a few months ago and In spite of the' vicissitudes under which the work has been carried on. It was no less a stirring foretaste of what is to be accomplished Along this line when these activities get finally organized and permanently under way In the premises of Prince Rupert's finally assured civic centre. It was a timely enough coincidence that the display for the youngsters, preview to a show which is to be staged soon after the official opening of the civic centre, should have fallen on the evening of the day on which announcement was made of the final authorization of the turning over of the building. Last night's show was featured by the performances of Rup-Rec leaders-men and women in such diverse items as muscle building fundamental gymnastics for men through to spring board tumbling, parallel bars, buck vaulting and mat tumbling while the girls started with graceful and precise fundamental athletics and went on with tumbling and acrobatics, culminating highlights being their tap dancing and pyramid building acts. The little junior girls also made a hit with their gymnastics. Popular novelties of the evening Included the clowning of Eric (Bo Bo) Freeman, the boxing act between Bennv Wlndle and Leo Adolphe.-the blindfold boxing 0f young Bill Whelan and Steve James. The weight of the show, of course, fell upon the broad shoulders of Director George McGregor who too a leading part In most of the men's gymnastic acts as well as acting as master of ceremonies and stage manager. The musical accompaniments were ably provided by Andy Mc-Naughton and Kay Watson. Mrs. Jean Potter was Instructor for the tap dancing. Others assisting in connection with behind the scenes arrangements were Pete Collins, lighting; Harry Lowe and Charlie Collins, property, and Mrs. Benny Windle and Bill Stone, makeup. Members of Khtda Girls' Club, under Joan Taylor, acted as ushers.
