Box 344 FRASER STREET Prince Rupert Becoming more popular every day AMR tT.fW It I iWrTHOUT A m food of such supreme flavor and tenderness that vegetables assumed a new Importance In their diet. This, nutrlonlsts tell us, b to be desired. For gaiden-fresh vegetables are not only delicious, but nutrl tious. Science has developed many new facts about the loss of vitamins when vegetables grow stale. It has long been known that the sugar content of sweet corn, peas and several others rapidly changes to starch aftpr they are picked, with consequent loss of flavor. Holding freshly picked peas In a warm room for 3 to 4 hours will materially toughen the skins and one to two-thirds cf their original Vitamin 0 may be lost by vegetables in 24 hours at room temperature. The quicker they, are eatn, frozen or canned, after being Harvested, the more delicious vegetables are. ,tc the time Is brief, indeed, before the keen edge of their flavor begins to grow duJl. Vegetables should be used as soon after picking as possible. Time Is on of the elements that favor the' home gardener uncooked vegetables on the table in less than 15 minutes, and cooked vegetables In less than JO mlnutps from the time they were growing. That seems an extreme view. For those whose gardens are not close to the kitchen door it would make harvesting a footrace. But authorities agree that, to be truly "garden fresh" vegetables must be served within an hour or two of harvesting, so that to eat them Is an experience which few except home gardeners who grow their own can enjoy. There is much to be gained from the expansion of home gardening which seems certain to follow the war. Homes and communities will be beautified by flowers; and vegetables grown In backyards will notably Improve the health and contentment of those that grow them. BUY WAR SAVINGS STAMPS ! Hoffman of Calgary has an unusual hobby the cutting and polishing of semi-precious ;tones, and many of them he fashioned into beautiful pieces of Jewelry. Others he displays In showcases. They are not mounted In settings. Mr. Hoffman has the stones on display in a basement room, where he has a workshop. Agates predominate, but emeralds,, opals, Jade, quartz and garnet crystals and tourmaline are also on display. In seperate cases are petrified wood specimens and fossils collected from many parts of the world. One of the stones Mr. Hoffman valo.es most highly Is an agate which shows a perfectly-formed floral pattern in red and black in the centre of a cloudy white square. Other agates give the Illusion of sunset scenes; trees appear to be silhouetted In black against orange sunset and reflected in wavy blue water. Those known as "Iris agates" show a spectrum of color when catching the .light. "Thunder eggs," properly known as geodes, are part of the collection. They contain agate of multiple shades and design when cut. Mr. Hoffman started his hobby in 1938, his assets being an interest in minerals and onr small grinder. Since then he has Improvised four more machines. From the ceiling of his workshop are suspended dozens' of buffers and metal polishers, wood and felt "laps," each used for a different process in finishing the stones. The hobby has become a part of his hfe for Mr. Hoffman. He now Is teaching the polishing of the stones to several ex-servicemen under the government rehabilitation plan. Most of his raw material is shipped in from the United States agate from Montana, Oregon and Washington. Jade from Burma, opal from Australia and Mexico and tiger-eye from South Africa are also supplied when shipping is'avallable: American mineralogists often exchange agates and semi-precious stones for fossils Mr. Hoff man has gathered from the beds of the Red, Elbow and St. Mary Rivers. ORIENTAL BEDLAM Ninety-two languages and dialects are spoken in India. No. 14-40 IN THE SUTOEME COURT OP HHITISJI COLUMUIA IN PROBATE IN THE MATTER OP THE ESTATE OP HENRY SCHMIDT. Thej fire, which began In a paint locker in the building, was put i out with only minor damage. I According to Chief Lock, the boys set fire to a quantity of paint and brushes in a locker in the building at Second Avenue near First Street. The smoke was noticed by a passerby who notified the fire department. "I could hardly say that the boys were playing. It looked more like deliberate mischief," Chief Lock commented. "It could have been a serious fire." The boys were not aprehended. HOOP SKIRT COMES BACK "NEW YORK, 0i It looks as Jf Grandmother is .going to have the last laugh after all. For her ultra-modern granddaughters, they of the streamlined silhouette and the, stratosphere ambitions, arc going br'ic to hoop skirts. Newest, conversation piece on the summer fashion horizon Is the good old - fashioned hoop skirt, built on the same principle as those worn by belles of pearly 100 years ago. The designer who launched this startling pendulum fashion is Adele Simpson, who decided if hios were in style again she would put hoops around them. The summe revering .gowns she shows have a daguerrotype charm all their own, and conservative souls can wear them without the hoops if they like. In that case they become merely slim-waisted full-skirted d'resses. Miss Simpson aVro uses an Ingenious method of cutting and tucking to produce a modified version of the hoop skirt for street wear. She calls It the "lantern front." It is a sktrr with front fullness p.nd a padded look about the hips. These new picturesque stvles are strictly for the ilim-waisted. Though curves are Jn style above and below the diaphragm, that midriff must be slender and fragile. So we may go one step further and return to the day of the whale-bons corset. In which P.ranny, would, he Justified in letting loose a hearty guffaw. I Modern EHowfrtf By ROBERTA LEJ3; O.
