SHORT SPORT Spring has come and pupils of the Ontario School for the Blind at Brantford have reluctantly concluded another season of hockey which has been popular at the school for the past eleven winters. The school has Its own outdoor rink, where there is skating every day when the weather is right and hockey Is played three afternoons a week. Some or the pupils are totally blind, others have partial sight, but none has more than 10 pd? cent vision. Even those who are totally blind display surprising skill In skating and hockey, and the season just finished was brought to a red-letter conclusion when the pupils staged an Ice carnival, the first ever held at the school. After becoming proficient and comfident in their ability to get around on .skate, the pupils who want to play hockey arc given the necessary additional Instruction. There are four teams each season, two senior and two Intermediate. Totally blind players oppose each other, and partially sighted players also have their own teams, but there are also mixed teams combining totaKy blind and partially sighted hockeyists. Each goalkeepar dees his best to attract the opposition to ihim and then tries to prevent a score. The blind pupils use regulation sticks and a puck of regulation size, but instead of being made of rubber, thi1 puck is of steel, with ball bearings in side to make a ringing noise. Th" players locate the puck by Its sound and when a goalie hear it close to him he gives his opponents a break by calling out repeatedly: "Shoot right herel" When they do, he docs his bes, to defend his goal.
