Demott, vice-president of SKF Industries, Inc. He said the minute balls, 1-millimeter In diameter, were designed especially for new-type fountain pens, but that they also will be available for delicate Instrument bearings and other applications. Untouched by human hands during manufacturcj; and Inspected, gauged and packaged under rigidly controlled temperature conditions, the balls are so tiny that 7,000 weigh only a ounce. Priced to sell at about two cents apiece, an ounce would be worth approximately $140 in contrast to $35 for gold of the same weight. Made to extremely fine tolerances, the 1 -millimeter balls average within 5l,00O,OO0th of an Inch of being perfectly round and have a diameter variation of S0l,000,000th of an inch or less. I A special process Imparts a satin-like finish to the balls so as to give inks and lubricants greater surface cohesion, Mr. De-Mott said. This finish, he added, consists, of minute scratches on the balls which are Invisible unless highly magnified. The balls are made from high carbon and chromium wire 45-1,000th of an Inch thick which is fed Into machines that cold-, press ball blanks at the rate of 18,000 an hour. Grinding operations before and after heat-treating and tempering "peel" from 4l.OOOth to 8l,00Oth of an Inch at a time from the balls until they are reduced to the final size of 391, 000th of an Inch.
