Pierce, Teng off to a start Saturday night in the Civic Centre gym with a four-game session which promised a season of first class hoop workmanship which undoubtedly will draw consistently large crowds to the bleachers. Considering the start which, was made at the opening games, this city should toe able to pro vide a sufficiently trained squad at the end of the season to take part in the provincial playoffs. The quality of play Saturday night was such that anyone not knowing of the summer recess, might easily have believe that the teams had played continuously throughout the year, instead of having resumed prac tice only a couple of weeks ago. Lead-off game in the night's schedule was a Junior fixture. Gyro versus Junior High School, in which the former triumphed by a slender 26-23 margin. JUNIOR TEAMWORK Teamwork and combination of a high quality characterized both teams. Considering that this was the first game of the season, it is safe to predict that both these teams will provide some of the best basketball of the year( despite their youth). Leading scorers were Shier of Gyros and Wong of High School, both with 10 points. Wong led off the scoring Immediately after the opening whistle. Half-time score was 12-11 for Gyros. LADIES LEAGUE Peoples Store bowed in defeat to High School 29-14 in the Ladies' League opener. In thls game, too, the high scorers, Blaln of Peoples Store and Budinich of High School, tallied 10 points each. High School threw In a for midable 10-girl line-un against the six played toy People's Store, although this was obviously done fo give all the girla on the team a chance o get on the floor right from the start of the season. Half time score was 15-12 In favor of Peoples Store, but this was overcome in the second half FOR SALE FOR SALE 1940 Dodge Sedan. Apply 13 Taxi. NEWLY DECORATED Transient Rooms CAFE In Connection LICENSED PREMISES (Renovated) PIIOtfE 51 by rallies by Thaln, Budinich and Hamilton of High School SENIOR "R" High scnooi, which ran up such a notable record last season, showed Its determination to stay up front- when it downed Maceys toy a decisive 45-17 score in the Senior B fixture. Forman of High School dominated the scoring, tallying 14 points. He was followed toy Cic cone of High School who scored 12. The game was one-sided from the start, with High School lead ing 25-8 at half time. B. Pierce was Macey's top scorer with 7. SENIOR A In the final .game of the night, Art Murray's 99 Taxi squad gave some substance to their sponsor's claim "that they are the elite of the local basketball world by trouncing. Savoy 55-33. Mr. Murray's boys also had things- pretty much their own way throughout, the game. At half time they had shown a clear winning trend by leading. Savoyi 27-6. Then they really got down to work. High scorer for 99 was lanky Anuis MacPhee, for whom the basket Is within easy reach. He tallied 14 points, and was. followed toy Viereck with 13. Boyo Gur-vich led the individual scoring for Sovoys with 9 points. Lineups: Junior High School Boulter 3, Wong 10, Lien 4, Forman 6. Olsen. G. Carlson, Eldsvlck, Hill, G. Garl-son. Oyro Shier 10. JJOOP TALK Well we've been to see the opening games of the 1946-47 basketball season and there seems to be room for a little re shuffling of the players In the senior division before the season advances, too far: In the senior game on Saturday night' the 99 outfit of MacPhee, Beynon, Houston, Domlnato and Lindsay did exactly what It was Insisted they would do and that was com pletely outclass the upstarts fromthe Savoy Hotel and In the first half of the game allowed the losers only seven points to their 26. Nine-Nine used two Intermediate forwards In Viereck and Pierce and were verv well served by bothr of them which proves a point. There are too many boys staying in the minor league In order to have It a little easier and it looks as though the league executive will have to take mai-ters in hand. The Bo-Me-Hl team In the Intermediate bracket looked all the way as smart as the Savoy team In the senior league and were all, over the Macey squad from the starting gun. We hope that the Savoys were having their night off as it were and that they will come Into their own on their next night out but by their show on Saturday It looks as though Dr. Montgomery will have to put In sonifr extra .sessions at the gym working on their shortcomings. Saturday night the older 9 club had everything handed to them.
