Box 654 Floral Accents for Mother's Day These Need Warm Weather - It will be time now to start think ing about and in the southern parts of Canada, actually plant- lag those flowers and vegetables which cannot stand any frost. These are things like gladiolus, dahlias, and other soft, tender stemmed flowers, and melons, squash, etc., among the veget ables. There Is nothing to be gained by setting out or planting these until the weather Is warm, also the soil. Frost will kill most of them or injure them so badly that they will take weeks to Melons and Squash Where space Is limited thesei vines can be grown along Ihe'row of corn or at tlie edge of the garden where they will trail over the fence, path or perhaps the plot o! the next-door neighbor. For best results, however, squash and melons should be planted in specially prepared hills. Hills are simply loose soil built up in mounds 2 or 3 feet across and about G Indies high. Into these should 'be worked some well-rotted manure or black mulch. This keeps the soil open so that the soft, fibrous roots can penetrate easily and the darkish col or of the muck or well-rotted' manure obsorb'? the heat of the sun which these plants love. Plant about five seeds to a hill. Later thin to about three plants to each group. Keep weeds cleared away, watch out for bugs, and to encourage early fruiting hip off. end vines when half a dozen melons or a dozen or so squash are on the way. Stake the Tall Ones Staking Is advisable for tall plants or these pruned to grow tall. Tall perennials like delphiniums and hollyhocks are quite liable to break over in a high wirid or during a heavy rain and make the whole garden look a mess. Stakes Unique ideas In floral arrangements are presented for Mother's Day gift flow-, ers. Above left, the five lovely camellias form a corsage which, if desired, can be removed for wear, still leaving a well balanced are rangement of pink snapdragon spikes and blue iris. Above right, to match a woman's personality. Is an attractive Mother's Day design for the very modern mother contrasting an elegant spray of orchids with violets and carnations. Left, using a large crystal ball, violets and pink carnations are clustered on the inside at the tease of several stately calla lilies, which are graduated in height outside the bowl. Practical note is that placing flowers Inside the bowl prolongs their, keeping quality, possibly 100 to 200 per cent. about an Inch thick and wide, and as tall as necessary, will hold these flowers and also tomatoes. They need not be conspicuous if driven in behind the plants and they can always be stained brown or green. Plants should be tied to them loosely witli soft twine or raffia. For bushy things like peonies, hoops of wire or wood placed In posi tion before blooming will prove very satisfactory. Watch Out For Bugs There are few places in Canada free of garden pests. These things, bugs, worms or disease, usually strike suddenly and ha. Experts advise keeping a sh? rp lookout and al?o a supply cf spray or dust on hand for instant counter attack. Thinning A common mistake of the new gardener Is to sow seed too thickly and to allow plants to grow too close together. Petunias, cosmos, zinnias and other fair-sized flowers should be thinned to at least 10 inches apart. Melons and other thing3 grown in individual hills should also be thinned to not more than .three or four plants. Crowded plants will be weak and spindly Baseball Scores American League Chicago 5, Boston 7. Detroit 9, Washington 8. Cleveland 6, Philadelphia 7. St. Louis fi. New York 1. Spring operations are furthest advanced in eastern and southern sections of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, but good progress Is toeing made elsewhere with . only northern Manitoba reporting delay due to snow and rain over the week-end. High winds In Saskatchewan and Alberta have caused some soil drifting damage, and in moisture deficiency areas have dried out the top soil, tending to create uneven germination, Some farmers In these sections are withholding seeding operations waiting additional moisture, according to the weekly crop report of the Department or Agriculture of the Canadian National Railways. In the Okanagan Valley the weather during the past week has been warm and dry. Applf trees are now at the peak of bloom with normal production anticipated. Weather has been fairly cool and windy. Prod.S;-tion of fruit In preliminary estimates anticipates seven million boxes of apples, two million -rates of peaches, one million crates of prunes, with the cherry crop remaining about the same as last year. These estimates point to an above normal fruit crop. Advertise In The Dally Hews. With Minora Blades! Minora is a real money saver because it lasts far longer than ordinary blades.
