m m u ptfnrc Ummt Daflp mus Wednesday, September 25, 1916 CONGREGATION HONORS BISHOP FOR YEARS OF SERVICE AS DEAN In recognition of his service as their Dean and Rector for the last 17 years, members of the .congregation of St. A n d r e w's Cathedral presented Bishop J. B. Gibson with a specially-made pectoral Cross at a social gathering in the Cathedral hall last night. The presentation was made by Judge W. E.. Fisher, who is senior church-? warden. ."The cross Is of silver and mercurial gilt with a ctniral stone of lapis lazuli. Overlaid in the centre Is a ragged cross, symbolic of the tree on which Christ suffered. Four fleur-de-lys adorn the intersection and at each end are1 three interlaced circles, symbols of the Holy Trinity. The chain is an antique one of IS karat gold. in -making the presentation. Judge Fisher said: "It affords great pleasure to the congrcga-tloh of our Cathedral and to me as its representative to mark the ending or your-'ong term of service here as our dean and rector, and your elevation to the Blshop-rte of Caledonia by presenting you with this pectoral cross as an enduring niomento of our gratitude and esteem. rThe years in which you have served so faithfully have had thir full share of difficulty, and the destiny of the congregation and, indeed, the wm(- community has hung in the balance often for years at a time. "The years of depression when we were held in the grip of paralyzing economic forces were followed by years when the community was almost .submerged by an overwhelming number of strangers. We realize that as the years go on we shall have cause for further realization of the part that your own personal self-sac rifice and devotion to duty has meant in ensuring a future built on a solid foundaiin." Judge Fisher then handed Bishop Gibson the cross In its case which was lined with vcl- I vet used in making capes for the Canons of Westminster Abbey at the funeral of King George V in 1936. The cross was made by W. Frank Knight, ecclesiastical craftsman of Wellingborough, Northhamptoiuhlrc, Eng. Mr. Knight has produced many notable nieces of ecclesiastical ornament, of which perhaps the mast outstanding is the famous screen in the chapel of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey H DRRBISBSIIHIINB3DIIII B IDIIIIIII1IV Distributed by: SOL!)
