Mast of the mills, 107 In fact, are situ ated in the interior, many of them being "small shows," a big percentage of which are portable mills which are moved to the scene of the logging operations. In the coast region there are 13 mills, three of which are on the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Queen Charlotte Islands mills, according to Mr. Kuiland-er, produce only for local requirements. The number of sawmills operating in the district In 1945 Increased over 1944 when there were only 116 producing. Logging operations in the district include the big camps on the. Queen Charlotte Islands which produce spruce, hemlock and cedar which Is transported by raff to mills in the south Logging in the Interior is practically all carried on in conjunction with sawmill operations often managed by the same person. Since the closing down of Aero Timber Co., the crown-owned company which was established to produce Sitka spruce for war time needs, Sitka spruce production on the Queen Charlottes has stopped, according to Mr. Kullander. Logging is carried on In the Queen Charlottes by Pacific Mills, and the J. R. Morgan and Kelly Logging companies. Incidentally, according to figures supplied by Mr. Kullander, the pole and piling cut In the Prince Rupert district during the 10 year period from 1936 to 1945 inclusive was 17,000,000 lineal feet, while during the same period 1,117.000 ties were cut.
