In a chancing world it ,s important to answer this question ms discussion we shall confine our at-nnstianity as expressed in the "New recognized that Christian- degrees of purity in a multi- lng. Christianity s roots are in the past and It will always seem reactionary to those who violate its principles. On the other hand Christianity Is not reactionary. Notice Jesus' attitude In the sermon on the mount. In Matthew 6 he emotes scripture only to revise It. We might trans:ate ills words In verse 21 by wilting: "In olden times they have said, "Thou shalt not kill' . . .But I command you, 'Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the Judgment.'" Here the command of our Lord Is not a contradiction but an addition to thescrlpturc. It docs, however, suggest His attitude to change and represents a criticism of the past. I should not want to place too much weight on the meaning of :he words Jesus uses to introduce scripture but they are suggestive-To the devil He declares adamantly that there is an unchangeable principle that cannot be altered. To His disciples He criticizes the ancient law and radically commands a new one. Christianity is both reactionary and radical. In the face of the depersonalizing power of the macnine age it Is reactionary ana talis us back to a simpler life where people are more Import-nnt than thlnss. In the face of injustice .imbedded in privilege it is radical. To quote the words of the Oxford Conference report the Chrlstlon standard of life, the law of love, "must challenge any social vstem which provides social privileges without reference to the social functions per-pormed by individuals, or which creates luxury and pride on the one hand and want and insecurity on the other." In a world of change Christianity provides a standard. Against every new enemy of man It Is reactionary, a stone breaking those who fall against it. Against every ancient wrong it is radical, "sharper than a two-edged sword" summoning men to a new and better day.
