The slugging Puerto Rican said and we quote: "I think "Mexico has a future for all Latin American players." Olmo, -who turned down a Brooklyn contract calling for a reported $7,500 a year, will receive more than $10,000 a year in Mexico. But some names will be missing, among them such stars as Pam Barton, killed in an air crash in November, 1943; William Laidlaw, Henry Cotton's assistant, killed in an RJV.F. raid over Germany; Dale Bourn, the dashing internationalist, killed on a gun site during a German air raid in Octooer, 1941; and Kenneth Scott, a former captain of Oxford University, killed in action against the Germans. Many other amateurs have come through the war after extended service. One British Walker Cup golfer, "Laddie" Lucas, a lefthander, reached the rank of wing commander in the R.A.F., and as a Spitfire pilot won a string of decorations for his part in the Battle of Britain and the Battle of Malta. Old-timers Cyril Tolley and Roger Wethered, who served in the Army, will probably be back in. competition. Tolley, now 50, has been moving that, ball- a long way in recent matches with old cronies, and probably will put some of the untried youngsters to the test. Henry Cotton, who reached the i rank of flight-lieutenant before being Invalided out with a duodenal ulcer. Cotton raised many thousands of pounds, playing matches for the Red Cross and service charities. Many of the pros served in the special police force, the most notat-e wartime "Bobby" being the former open champion, Alfred Padgham, recently discharged after serving since early in. the war. Billy Cox.! known in 'North America as "Whiffy," after a few months in, the special police, took a -commission in the Army. Open champion Dick'Burton, who won his title at St. Andrew's in 1939, served more than three years with the R.A.F. in the Middle East. Right now British pros are primarily occupied with the action of United States pros in cutting out the stymie. They feel that the stymie is an integral part of the game. Mast British golf writers were disappointed with last year'.? professional tournaments which showed little in the way of new talent. However, with $80,000 at stake in various tournaments this year, it is hoped that professional gold will "get aqwn to brass tacks" and produce good competition for future matches with the Unlred States. In the amateur field things are uncertain and there will be no home international matches. The English and the British open championships are the only important tournaments scheduled. British women golfers, too, are treading carefully. They have "hertiilcd the Ladies' Open for the fall. Charlie Conacher practically clinched the '19 3 5 National Hockey League scoring honors when he poured in four of Toronto's ten goal? against Cana-diens at Montreal eleven years ago last night. Final statistics showed Conacher in the No. 1 spot . Fourteen years ago today Vancouver badminton stars won four out of five championships in the national tournament at Winnipeg. Jack Underhlll won the men's singles and, palred-xvith Noel Radford, also took the'dou-bles. Anna Kier won the women's singles and teamed with Radford to take the mixed dou bles.
