It provokes the elementary question -of France's basic ability to govern herself. Today the seeds are being Jagain sewn of domestic dissension -which might well, under quite po?-Isibly arising circumstances, lead to r another collapse. And what goes on ;in France is unfortunately to be seen : in other nations of Europe. t C.N.R. APPOINTMENTS DECAUSE Vconditions have return v ed to normal and an expansion of T railway business in this area is anticipated," the Canadian National Railways has changed the set-up of ; its traffic administration from k Prince Rupert, separating the pas-ienger department from the freight. ;William Ciiiickshank, experienced passenger man, who has grown up from the position of clerk right here in Prince Rupert, takes charge of the passenger end. Peter Lakie devotes himself henceforth exclusively to freight. Both men know the .Prince Rupert situation very well 'iind are in an excellent position to administer existing business, develop 3iew business and serve the district .-under their jurisdiction efficiently land well. M.CO MEMBER OP CANADIAN PRESS AUDIT BUREAU OP CIRCULATIONS CANADIAN DAILT NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION A : On To Alaska - - -FIVE REPRESENTATIVE BUSINESS MEN of Prince Rupert TWENTY are taking tomorrow off to make a spontaneous international goodwill trip to Alaska's "first city" of Ketchikan. They are doing this ?amid a busy season when most of them have other activities on which "might well keep them at home. But they feel it is a psychological moment to make this gesture of personal and community interest in the people across the international line to the north, to see their situation at first hand and ascertain if there is anything further that can be done to aid them and 'develop mutually beneficial relations not only at this particular time of their jneed and difficulty but to establish relations that will become both close and lasting. a? Southeastern Alaskans have long been conscious of the good use they could make of the port and railway of Prince Rupert in the more direct transportation connection it offers them with the main United States. The recent maritime difficulty which cut them off from Seattle and the neglect 'they have suffered of recent years from the American steamship lines have ;served to make Alaskans more deeply sensitive of this port's importance in relation to the territory. It is well that Prince Rupert business men, on their part, should take this opportunity to get personally in touch with them and get a first hand view of their problems and the possibilities of helping vthern to meet them not only now but in the future. FASTER BUT WORSE AN ANNOUNCEMENTS change in time for train schedules into Prince George and Jasper from the west adds to the already overlong delay by passengers connecting with main line trains from the central interior and increases the strain on an impatient and long-suffering public which is forced to travel the "slow train" via Jasper, says the Interior News. While the speed-up to Prince George is negligible, it is a welcome one, and so would be the faster trip into Jasper if quicker connections with main line trains were the result. However, the only outcome will be a longer layover, which travellers already find a test of nerves. The only solution to this bad news is for Chambers of Commerce throughout the Interior and as far as Prince Rupert to advocate for a fast train service with better connections at Jasper. If such a demand is made now we may see it inaugurated for next, summer's travel. TALKING OF TURKEYS IF PRODUCTION statistics equal. those of 1945, Canada will have raised nearly 36 million pounds of turkeys this year. While this figure sounds stupendous, this country is unable to produce sufficient turkey meat for home consumption, despite the fact that none is being exported. Alberta and Saskatchewan produce the largest flocks, but Ontario is not far behind with some complete confinement plants rearing more than 10,000 turkeys a season. The most popular Canadian breeds are the White Holland and the broad-breasted Bronze.
