Adult salmon which are vigorous enough to get back to t he spawning grounds lay their egg3 in streams tributary to some I lake. The eggs are laid In the fall, and hatch the following spring. Knowing that the per centage Js against her. the female salmon deposits plenty. According to Dr. Prltchard, one pair of salmon are responsible for as many as 4,500 ggs. If these eggs survive the dangers of being stranded on gravel bars away from the water and manage to hatch, about 2,520 of them will reach the lake where the first year of life is spent. From then on it is really a shambles. Only about 80 of them survive the first year, what with tother predators always beina around hungry. Having reached the ambitious age of one year, .the 80 salmon 'then head for the sea. That is a mistake. Because after a few years t he original 80 have been reduced to eight by the tmv they decide to head back home. Out of the remaining eight the fisherman takes a rake-off. Those which survive, t he nej.s and the trolls are sometimes overcome by obstructions in the Skeena, such as Morlcetown Falls, or low water In the i streams, and succumb. On the average, two falmon out of every hatching of 4,500 eggs return to the spawning grounds. "Our job is to ascertain whether the current decline In the salmon population is a true ( decline or only a temporary dis location of the runs," Dr. Prltch-tird told the Rotarians. "Our aim is conservation for maximum use, so that the fishing industry can take out as mucn fish as possible 'and still be assured that there will be fish in future years." THIS WATCH WINDS ITSELF On my trip to the East recently I took one of our self-winding watches to see for myself how they perform.. I was away a month and found the watch only half a minute slow. That was quite satisfactory as Jt keeps really good time now after a small adjustment. I had not wound or set the watch In that time. The small motion of one's arm in walking or working keeps the watch wound by means of a small weight inside the case. If laid aside it has enough reserve power to run 18 hours. Of course, you can always wind It like an ordinary watch If desirable. In dry weather he will, if at all possible, soak the gardens and lawns once a week. Where no hose is available he will have things Jlke lettuce and beans close to the house so that they can be watered with the minimum of inconvenience. He knows that weeds are molsture-Tobbers and these he will keep removed so that the vegetables wanted et all the moisture that nature provides. A weekly cultivation equals a shower because it tends to conserve moisture and a small dose of commercial fertilizer Is equivalent to another. . . SUMMMER HINTS Peas and beans will continue bearing longer If pods are removed regularly and promptly as soon as ready for the table. It is well to keep out of the bean patch when the plants are damp as stirring them up at this time is liable to spread rot. Sweet peas should be picked regularly to encourage continuous bloom. Grass should not be cut as often or as close in hot weath er, and in watering remember that one thorough soaklns Is worth a dozen sprinkles. Indeed the latter is worse than no watering at all where the lawn is shaded, as the sprinkle simply encourages tre roots to come to the surafce and (c.rowd out the grass. TENDER VFG ETTA ELES The real secret of tender, crip vegetables Is quick, unchecked growth. Beets, carrots, beans, celery and similar things without stringing or tough cores comes from gardens where the growjh has been hurried along, unchecked by weeds or other neglect. By keeping the soil well cultivated quick growth can ly developed almost regardless of dry weather. Experienced gardeners thin those vegetables which need spacing for proper I even and speedy development. Consult a good seed catalogue They harvest them when they Better English ( By D. C. You simply BLUE them every time you wash them not in the washing itself but in the last rinse water. Frequent washings will never fade them nor turn them yellow if you add a swish or two of Reckitt's Blue to the final rinse on wash day.
