Mayor Daggett outlined the efforts of city council since 1943 to correct the situation at the Pioneers Home and the struggle since 1944 to provide new .quarters for the Inmates. He quoted directly from minutes of city council and committee meetings. He pointed out that while the provision of such a home for elderly men is not primarily a city responsibility, the home was established here because many of the men wished to remain in the north, which they had pioneered, so that they would be among their friends. He told of the efforts by council since 1943, first to provide a new home by building one and, later, when building was con ceded to be a wartime impossibility, to finding some existing structure that would be suitable. "There have been fewjnecl-Ings, either of council or of the health committee," he said, "that the matter of better quarters lor the pioneers has not been mentioned." The site originally chosen In Section Two had aroused objection, expressed by petitions and delegations, on the part of a certain section of the population. Mayor Daggett said. "When wc called for tenders to build a new home we received objections to the Section Two site both by petitions and delegations. We were told that there would be 'lots of vacant buildings after the war.'" "In spite of protests it Is still the opinion of city council that S. E.
