Shipbuilding In Australia is under federal government direction, and the government is anxious to develop the Industry by cutting down on overseas construc tion of ships used In Australia. It will Introduce legislation shortly that all ships trading on the Australian coast, many of which are now built overseas, will have to be built in Austra lia. The government has also or dered the local construction of 62 freighters for use bri the Australian coast within the next five years. The freighters range in size from 550 to 9,000 tons and their construction is designed to keep Australian shipyards in continuous employment during the switch-over from wartime to peacetime production. Most of them will be used to replace vessels which are more than 25 years old. The government has not decided yet whether the freighters will be sold, leased or , chartered to private shipping companies. The present metho4 is for the government to hand the ships over to shipowners, who run them on an agency basis, but shipowners suggest the government may be entering the shipping business Itself. There Is a precedent for this in that the government owned a line of five liners and two freighters during the First Great War. It sold the ships after the war for $8,000,000.
