DAILY EDITION Friday, May 12. 1944 Route for Alaska Highway . . . Several items in the daily press at Vancouver during the past couple of weeks reveal the fact that the proper authorities in the southern part of British Columbia and, more important, probably, in the neighboring states of Washington and Oregon, have .not been made to see the light of existing facts in regard to a highway to Alaska through B.C. We feel that they haven't been fully acquainted with the facts regarding the proposed routes and especially not the newly-sponsored Hazelton-White-horse route via the Bell-Irving River and Telegraph;; Creek. Much valuable ground work has been done by the combined B6ards of Trade and Chambers of . Commerce in the interior in sending a delegation to Victoria and Seattle to put "before the authorities the possibilities of this route. However, the job is barely started, as can be seen by the remarks of: prominent men in Seattle and Portland. As we have suggested to the Smithers and District Chamber of Commerce, we think a separate Alaska Highway Committee should be set up at once ;o launch a strenuous campaign of publicity on behalf of the western route and to see that the proper authorities are convinced of the possibilities and advantages of this route. Perhaps we should start a public subscription to bring several of the influential men of the U.S. Northwest States up here where we could present sur information on our own familiar ground. There is no getting ruvay from the fact that we are losing valuable- time. There is plenty of talk of a highway, and a railway, to connect Washington and British Columbia with Alaska. The needs of a war in the Pacific micht sneed these developments beyond our imagination so let's have some action. Interior News.
